Roderick MILLER Obituary

Roderick P. Miller Jr., 81, died Friday (April 23, 2010) at his home at 406 S. 24th. Mr. Miller was born June 20, 1928, in Newark, Ohio, a son of Roderick P. and Angela Fleek Kennedy Miller, and was raised in Quincy. He was educated at Georgetown Preparatory School and Georgetown University, Saint Louis University, and Quincy College. He married Mary Kathryn Yates of Quincy on Dec. 29, 1952. Mr. Miller worked in the insurance business in Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, and St. Louis. In 1968 he returned to Quincy to become president of Roderick P. Miller women's apparel store at 515 Maine, which was founded by his father in 1935. He was a member of the board of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and was named Retailer of the Year. He was president of the board of St. Mary's Hospital, served on the Quincy School Board, and was president of the Quincy Country Club. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. Rod was instrumental in bringing the TEC and Cursillo movement to Quincy and participated in both TEC No. 1 and Cursillo No. 1 in the Quincy area. Rod was well-known for his dry humor and wit. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Yates Miller; a son, Roderick P. Miller III and his wife, Dr. Judy Schwartz, of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter, M. Heidi Morrison and her husband, Paul Morrison, of Quincy; grandchildren, Patrick Miller, Jeremy and Jessica Schurman of Oakland, Seaman Ted Morrison of Pensacola, Fla., and Samuel, Benjamin, Oliver and Rachael Morrison of Quincy; a sister, Grace Miller Stillwell and her husband, John, of Charlottesville, Va.; and an aunt Jean Elliot of Newark, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents. SERVICES: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Quincy University Chapel. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday in the QU Chapel. MEMORIALS: Blessing Hospital Foundation for Hospice or to the Holy Cross Friary. ARRANGEMENTS: Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. I will always remember Rod's smiling face as we shopped at Millers and how he always took the time to ask how we were doing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!
