Roger Dwight Voorhis, age 85, of Quincy, died Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 4:04 pm in Sunset Home.
Roger was born July 27, 1939 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Melvin and Laverna Stuffing-Voorhis. He married Mary E. Friant on August 13, 1966 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Quincy. She survives.
Roger was raised in the Ursa Bottoms Indian Grave District and was a 1957 graduate of Unity High School. He joined the Army Reserves and was called to active duty shortly thereafter. He graduated from Gem City Business College in 1961 and continued working on the family farm. Roger also worked for a time as a teller at State Street Bank. It was there he developed the relationships that eventually led to his position as Chief Accountant at the Illinois Veterans Home (IVH) in Quincy. Roger graduated from Quincy College (University) with a degree in accounting and business through the scholarship program offered by the State of Illinois to any Illinois state employees. He worked for the IVH a total of 29 years, which included six years spent as the Business Administrator at the IVH in Manteno, IL. After his retirement, Roger worked part time on a local farm in the Ursa bottoms and from 1996 to 2009 he worked at Bergners in the Quincy Mall.
Roger and Mary have been active members of the Church of St. Peter in Quincy since 1967. Roger was also a long time member of the Knights of Columbus where he played on the 35 and older softball team and, for many years, served as treasurer. He was also somewhat of a handyman and made many improvements to their home over the years. He loved baseball and was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan. Roger always looked forward to attending the monthly breakfast club for retirees of the Illinois Veterans Home. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Mary, include: two children, Lynda (Sonny) Melton of Quincy, and Mark (Linda) Voorhis of New Braunfels, TX; four grandchildren, Bryant Melton of Quincy, Colby Melton of Camden, IL, Gabrielle Voorhis of New Braunfels, TX, and Faith Voorhis also of New Braunfels, TX.
