Stephen T. "Steve" Havermale

1949 - 2018

Stephen T. "Steve" Havermale was born April 10, 1949, to Victor and Dorothy (Maas) Havermale. Steve married Marie "Angie" (Crnic) Havermale on July 9, 1975, she survives.

Steve's early life was spent in a loving home with his parents, brother and sisters on Quincy's southwest side. Steve had a deep love for Quincy and his old neighborhood at Fifth and Adams.

From an early age, Steve had a keen interest in electrical and electronic systems and components. Some of Steve's best times were spent working on electronic and intercom systems with his dad and brother, carrying on the Havermale family's love for electronics. As a young man, he was noted in his neighborhood for creating electrical systems, radios and various electrical and electronic pranks. He had a truly amazing ability to understand electronic theory, computers/electronic components and how they worked together. Steve spent his life using his self-taught abilities to help and educate others.

Steve attended St. Mary's Grade School and Christian Brothers High School, graduating in 1967. Steve worked at Keller's, the Quick Chick and Gem Electronics as a two-way radio and communications tower technician prior to serving in the Army. Steve served in the military receiving an honorable discharge in 1971, attaining the rank of sergeant. He returned to Gem Electronics after his service in the Army. In 1974, Steve and three partners started Alarm Systems Inc. (ASI), and in 1976, he went full time with ASI. In 1991, Steve became the sole owner and president of ASI and operated the business until it was sold to new ownership in 2012, completing over 44 years at ASI. Steve continued working at ASI as a project coordinator, advisor and mentor until his death. Steve took great pride in working hard to protect people and property. ASI was his vocation not just a job. He shared his great knowledge and tremendous work ethic with his family members and co-workers at ASI that inspired everyone around him.

Steve's personal life was highlighted by family and community involvement. He spent hours helping at Quincy Notre Dame as a ticket taker, scoreboard repairer, a member of the "Midnight Crew" that helped develop the softball field and as an active band parent. He enjoyed the family get-togethers at his childhood home with family on Friday nights. He treated all of his family acquired through marriage as family with no distinctions. Everyone was family to Steve and he to them. He always strived to make people feel welcome, comfortable and part of the group.

His greatest personal joy was being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. He loved attending family functions, parish picnics and community festivals, sporting events, school functions, band trips and any family event or event where there were people to meet and greet.

Steve is survived by his wife, Angie (Crnic) Havermale of Quincy; his children, Paul (Pam) Havermale of Quincy, Amanda (Tim) Doellman of Quincy and Chrissy (Jim) Graszer of Aurora; his grandchildren, Dr. Gregory (Dr. Katie Skaggs) Havermale of Quincy, Matthew (Lauren) Havermale of St. Peters, Mo., Bradley Havermale of Quincy, Noah Doellman of Quincy, Hunter Doellman of Quincy, Xander Graszer of Aurora and Liam Graszer of Aurora; his great-grandchild, Hudson Havermale of St. Peters; his siblings, Connie (Johny) Miller of Durham, Mo., Janet (Danny) Wolf of Quincy, Carol (Rick) Bridal of Quincy, Vicky (Lee) Hanlin of Monroe City, Mo., Kathy (Bruce) Albright of Quincy and Jerry (Debbie) Havermale of Payson; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his aunts and uncles.

Steve battled pancreatic cancer bravely for many months. He succumbed to the illness on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. He was a good man that will be missed by many.

SERVICES: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 13, at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.
