Velma Lynn Klusmeyer, age 97, of Quincy, died on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 11:28 am in Blessing Hospital.
She was born on December 6, 1927, the daughter of Lester and Ethel Shriver Mittelberg. She married William H. Klusmeyer in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1999.
Velma was raised on the family farm in rural Quincy, and attended a one room grade school. She graduated from Quincy High School. Velma was employed at JC Penny, and later as a bookkeeper at Canteen.
Being raised on a farm, she always had an interest in farming and crops, and was involved in grain sales and listened to the farm reports on the radio every morning. Velma was passionate about gardening and maintained a vegetable garden to grow fresh produce to use and share with family and friends. She also loved flowers and had flower gardens. Velma mowed her own lawn until she was 93. She also enjoyed traveling both in the states and abroad.
She was accomplished at sewing, knitting and crocheting, and made clothes for herself and her daughters. Velma was always interested in finances, and she was a member of a local women's investment club, where they learned about companies, investing in dividend stocks, and analyzing financial reports. Velma also loved baking, and made delicious apple, pecan and mincemeat pies and a variety of Christmas cookies to share.
Velma was a lifelong member of Salem Church, where she has been active in various roles, including the finance committee and the evening guild. She had been a girl scout leader, and was also a former member of the Elks Club.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jana (John Flesner) McMillan of Quincy, and Kay (Steven) Borkowski of Niles, IL; six grandchildren, Dr. Catherine McMillan of Tiffin, IA, Megan (Alex Bolton) McMillan of Washington, DC, Michelle (Dan Knowles) McMillan of Iowa City, IA, Dr. Anne (Marco Carreno) Borkowski of Jerome, ID, Daniel (Emily) Borkowski of Niles, IL, and Susan Borkowski of Niles, IL; four great-grandchildren, Justin and Jason Borkowski, Juliet Bolton, and Ilanna Knowles.
In addition to her husband, Velma was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Virgil Mittelberg.
Visitation: 9:30 – 11:00 am, Monday, November 3, 2025 at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
Service: 11:00 am on Monday, November 3, 2025 at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Chaplain Josh Vahle officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmount Cemetery.
