David Deuth Stewart, 83

David D. Stewart of Whitefish died on June 21, 2023. He was born in Mitchell, SD on September 18, 1939 to Dr. Robert Stewart and Marjorie Deuth Stewart. The family moved to Whitefish in 1940 where he lived until the age of 13. He graduated from high school in Alexis, IL and from the University of Iowa in 1961.

After serving in Vietnam as an interpreter, having attended the Army Language School to learn Vietnamese, he earned his MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, AZ and began a career in international business. David's first job was with the US Agency for International Development in Seoul, South Korea. He then joined the international department of Bankers Trust Co. in New York City where he traveled extensively in the Middle East and Africa. While living in New York he married Barbara Boyd and had two sons, Michael and Andrew.

In 1973, he joined Fleet Financial Group in Providence, RI. He traveled the world for many years, and managed Fleet's overseas office in Cairo, Egypt for two years and the office in London, England for six years.

In 1989 the family moved to Whitefish when David retired. In retirement he continued his travels around the world and enjoyed hiking, golf and tennis. As a devout Catholic, he served as a lector for many years. He engaged in various civic activities, leading the renovation of the Whitefish Depot and serving as chair of the organization that built the O'Shaughnessy Center and the Whitefish Library, co-founder and president of the Whitefish Community Foundation, and board member of Samaritan House. He was divorced in 1994.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Charles Borromeo church in Whitefish at 12:15 on Wednesday June 28th. Inurnment to follow at Whitefish Cemetery.

His two sons, Michael and Andrew, survive David. He was preceded in death by his younger sister Jan, who passed away in 2004. In lieu of flowers, he requested that a contribution be made to Samaritan House.
