Marjorie Carleton Obituary

Marjorie (Neville) Carleton, 89, died in Sandwich April 28, 2011, following a brief illness. Known to her many friends as Marge, she took great pleasure in answering to her other names: Mom, Gramma, and Great-Gramma Carleton. Born in Brockton, she was the valedictorian of her high school class and a 1943 graduate of Simmons College. Throughout her life, she was a tireless volunteer for a variety of organizations including Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Brockton, and the former Goddard Memorial Hospital. She was always willing to help out for her church and community yet she always had energy and attention to spare, which she enthusiastically gave to her family and friends. Marge and her husband David always enjoyed spending time together, whether it was at their beloved spot on Lake Winnipesaukee, volunteering together, or simply at home in Sandwich watching golf. Of her son David, she was always proud. Her granddaughters fondly remember her as one who taught them grandmotherly things like baking and needlework (at both of which she was an expert) | but also as someone who would serve M&Ms for breakfast, buy them their first lipsticks, and animatedly chat long distance when they phoned home from college. They both considered her an important friend and confidante. To her three great-grandchildren, she was Great Gramma Carleton, which was a role she relished | often sending newspaper clippings on the Red Sox to the eldest and always keeping a special cabinet filled with playthings for each child that she would constantly update as they grew. She leaves behind her husband of 64 years, David T. Carleton of Sandwich; her son, David "Skip" N. Carleton and his wife Edna of Sandwich; two granddaughters, Amy Carleton and her husband Jonathan Mills of Milton, Sarah Newman and her husband Andrew of Sandwich; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Natalie Mills and Michael Newman. A graveside service was held May 17, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Arrangements by Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., in Bourne. Donations may be made to your favorite charity.

I never crossed paths with your beloved at a Simmons event and we weren't at the College at the same time. But tomorrow I am having M & M's for breakfast! What wonderful memories you must have. My sympathies.
