Steven Hobbs Obituary

Steven Hobbs, 72, of Orleans, passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2020. He is predeceased by his mother, Peggy, and father, Malcolm Hobbs, a long-time editor and publisher of the Cape Codder newspaper. Born in Washington D.C., Steve spent the early years of his life growing up on Areys Pond in Orleans, then moved with his mother and brother, Christopher, to South Natick, where he attended the Rivers School in Weston, graduating in 1965. He attended Duke University for one year, then left to join the Navy where he spent time in Idaho in the highly specialized nuclear training program, and in Long Beach, California. After his time in the Navy, he returned to the East Coast, and after a year in Boston came back to Cape Cod, a place that felt like home. He designed and built a foreign car repair shop on Finlay Road in Orleans, Foreign Affairs, and developed a reputation as a gifted and skilled mechanic. He ran this successful business for 45 years. Steve always had a fascination with mechanical things and loved the process of discovery. He loved cars - both fixing them and driving them. Growing up on the water, Steve had a life-long love of boats, especially sailboats. He was an avid sailor, and over the years bought, fixed up, and sold a variety of vessels that he used to explore the waters of Pleasant Bay and beyond. Steve had two children. His son Cameron is a carpenter who lives in Orleans, and his daughter, Gemma, is a dental assistant who lives and works in Provincetown. Steve was a complicated man. He possessed a certain brilliance that could figure out almost anything. He could build a computer and build a house. Write computer code and rebuild an engine. What was more challenging to him was expressing himself thoughtfully. To many, he was contentious at worst and quirky at best. But, he was also someone who would help anyone, even a total stranger. He was at his core, a caring man. To those who knew and loved him, Steve's irascible, colorful, good self will be sorely missed. Besides his children, he leaves his brother, Christopher Hobbs of Jamaica Plain, MA, and a large and loving extended family. A memorial will be planned for later this summer. In memory of Steve, donations can be made in his name to Lower Cape Outreach.
