John C. Cataldo

1926 - 2017

John Charles Cataldo, 90, of Marco Island, Florida and North Eastham, Massachusetts passed away February 16, 2017 from Alzheimer's disease. He was born April 5, 1926 in Lyons Falls, NY. One of 7 children, his parents were John H. and Angeline Bourgeois Cataldo. Mr. Cataldo graduated from Syracuse University in 1950 with a degree in architecture. After graduating, he was employed by Sargeant, Webster, Crenshaw and Folly, Architects, AIA. During an early work assignment, he met and married Mary L. Bastian, daughter of Stella Slavin and Eugene Bastian of Elizabethtown, NY. Their happy marriage just celebrated 65 years on November 17, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and four children: Charles S. Cataldo of Eastham, MA; Daniel C. Cataldo (Kimberly Reider) of Hingham, MA.; Sally C. Leopold (Robert Leopold) of Foxboro, MA.; and Stephen J. Cataldo (Marybeth Hurley) of Madison, CT. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Rhiannon and Haily Cataldo; Jamie, Zoe and Josie Cataldo; Charles and Clayton Leopold; and Kayla and Collin Cataldo. Three of his brothers, Robert, George and Edward and many nieces and nephews also survive. In 1954, Mr. Cataldo founded J. C. Cataldo, Architect, AIA, in Schenectady, NY. His projects included many educational and healthcare facilities in the Capital District. He was a member of Schenectady Rotary, Lower Mohawk Club, Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Glenville, former president of the Eastern NY Chapter of American Institute of Architects, NCARB of Architects. He was licensed to practice architecture in New York, Massachusetts and Florida and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. During his very happy years on Marco Island, he was a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club, San Marco RC Church and Shipps Landing Condominium Association. The funeral mass and interment will be held at San Marco RC Church, Marco Island on Friday February 24 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Avow Hospice of Naples.
