Peter Somers Obituary

December 1, 1933 | January 18, 2014. Mr. Peter J. Somers, 80, of Wentworth Location, died at his home on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. He was born on Dec. 1, 1933, in Ipswich, Mass., a son to the late Henry and Winifred (Robishaw) Somers. He was a 1951 graduate of Ipswich High School, where he excelled at athletics. Peter also attended the Tilton Prep School and Boston University. After working odd jobs, he joined the US Marine Corps and served with honor during the Korean conflict. Following his service, he returned to Ipswich and worked for 25 years at the Ipswich Power Plant. Peter moved to northern NH in 1988 and worked at the hydro-dam in Errol for a few years. Peter was always an avid sports fan, and he loved to play baseball, football and softball. He was a member of the local softball league in Massachusetts for many years and played well into his 50s. He was known by many as an All-Star pitcher. He loved to tend to his vegetable garden and he enjoyed cooking. Peter loved to take his kids fishing when they were young, and he enjoyed camping at the family cottage on Akers Pond in Errol. He was a music lover and always had the radio turned on in his home. He was also a talented solver of crossword puzzles. He was also an active member of the VFW Post 1093 in Ipswich. He is survived by his five children, Deborah Somers-Carter of Errol, NH, Steven Somers and wife Diana of Ipswich, Mass., Karen Somers and partner Tony Zouvelous of Lowell, Mass., Cynthia Murray and husband Kenneth of Broomfield, Colo., and MaryBeth King and husband Chad of Thornton, NH; a brother, Gary Somers of Norway, Me.; a step-brother, Barry Ewing and wife Betty of Essex, Mass.; his former son-in-law Jack Carter of Ipswich; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Peter is predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Janice (Atherley) Somers in 1998; three brothers, Richard Somers, and John & Steven Somers as infants, and a sister, Constance Prince.
There are no public calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be at the Wentworth Location Cemetery later in the spring.
