Samuel Schroeter Obituary

Samuel Duncan Schroeter, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, known to his friends as Sam or Dunc, died on Aug 3, 2018, at age 93, after a fall in his home. He was born in Mineola, NY and grew up in Garden City. Healthy until the end, he nurtured a vegetable garden annually, played Bridge and Scrabble frequently with family and friends, and regularly beat his grandchildren at croquet. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed discussions about politics, history, baseball, and art history. He particularly enjoyed reading history books and biographies related to World War II and the Civil War. He enlisted in the United States Navy and after completion of the V-12 program at Middlebury college was stationed aboard the USS Belleau Wood in the South Pacific to serve until discharge in 1946. He was recognized for bravery. His love of history continued at Adelphi College, where he completed his degree in history. He married the late Elizabeth (Flandreau) of Scarsdale, NY. After college, they returned to Vermont to a dairy farm and raised their 3 children. He lived mainly in Middlebury, VT; Chester, VT; and Ipswich, MA. He was a dairy farmer, teacher, social worker for adults with developmental challenges (Bran don Training School) and was still caring for clients at age 93 as a guard ian. In 1967 he remarried Joan T. Bennett of Brattleboro, VT. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Ipswich MA. A thoughtful and gracious man, with an easy smile, he will be missed greatly by his three children: Susan Schroeter - Stokes of Seattle, WA; Mark D. Schroeter of Burlington, VT, and Craig D. Schroeter of Putnam Valley, NY. He is survived by his wife, Joan T. Schroeter, her two children Mark Bennett of Las Vegas, NV and Carol Bennett of Richmond, VT; and seven grandchildren Lesley Schroeter of Richmond, VA, Natasha Bennett Rohrer of Goleta, California, Reed Stokes of London, England, Mary Kate Schroeter, of Kampala, Uganda, Madeline Honigman of Richmond, Vermont, Olivia Honigman of Richmond, Indiana, and Samuel D. Schroeter, III of Brooklyn, New York. A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
