Stephen Chew Obituary

Stephen H. Chew, 67, of Boxford, a local sports legend of the early 60's, died unexpectedly, December 21, of an apparent heart attack. Born in Winchester on December 18, 1946, he was the son of John A. and Eleanor L. (Hickey) Chew. Chew was a well-known football star and team player on the famous 1963 Masconomet football squad coached by the late Walter (Wally) Roberts and coaching assistant Bob Hawks. Chew and his unstoppable teammates clinched Masco's renowned and only undefeated season to date, in their final game of the 63 season against Pentucket. Chew was that years Mass State football scoring champion, racking up 142 points with the help of an awesome team. When it came to State Champions, Chew apparently was following in his late fathers footsteps; John A. Chew won the 1947 Mass Amateur Golf Championship and was a local golf legend of his own time. Chew graduated in 1965 with an impressive 424 career rushing yards on the gridiron. Mr. Chew went on to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst and later joined the Marine Reserves. He had been employed for the past 25 years by United Liquor of Norwood as a salesman and Union Representative. Chewch, ChewChew, Stinky, Stevie or just Steve, as he had been known by friends and family, will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all whose paths he crossed. An old high school friend remembers Steve as a humble, good guy with a good sense of humor. He was a boyhood hero and friend who was always full of expression. Mr. Chew leaves behind his beloved wife, Christine (Hart) Chew of Boxford and his treasured son, Alex Chew also of Boxford. He was the brother of Alan Chew of Kuai, HI, Edward (Neddy) Chew and his wife Sharon of Merrimac, Carol Colburn of Haverhill, Cynthia Wyrocki of Topsfield, and Marcia McGarry and her husband Nicholas of Boxford. Mr. Chew also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, a world of friends near and wide, and a legacy of many laughs and happy times with all. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield on Monday at 11a.m. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Interment will be at Boxford Village Cemetery in Boxford.

Steve and I were fraternity brothers at UMASS-Amherst, but our friendship did not end at graduation. We lived together in Marblehead and had many, many enjoyable times together. As life goes on I taught his nephew in high school and
his Aunt Joanne Hickey was my neighbor.

Alan, Ned, Marcia and all the family....It must have been a terrible shock to all of you to lose Steve so suddenly. Please accept my sincere sympathy. He lived a very full life of achievements including a multitude of friends and the love of his family and I'm sure you all are grateful to have had him in your lives. Bless you in your loss. Hearing the news of Steve's death hit me like a bolt of lighting. Steve and I were fraternity brothers in college and later in our lives roommates in Marblehead.Though we have taken different paths in life,I will always be a better person for having been his friend.

I was the Sales Manager at Gilman Liquor for many years and had the pleasure of having Steve on our team. Steve was always a kind and courteous gentleman who was well liked by all of his comrades on the sales team. Steve was also well liked and respected by all of his customers. I am deeply saddened by his sudden loss and offer my deepest condolences to his entire family.

Steve was a fraternity brother at U Mass. We had not seen one another in over forty years, but, I will always remember his smile, laugh and generosity.

When I heard he passed away I was saddened, but a flood of great memories washed it away. We should all be remembered as fondly as is my old friend "Chew Chew".

Dear Chris,Alex and family members--Don and I are so sorry to hear of the untimely passing of Stevie. He will be missed by one and all who knew him, but particularly you and Alex. He had the most wonderful presence about him with his humor, kindness, and humility and spirit--he was a man of many talents and so understated. His laugh at himself and never at the expense of others is what we all loved most about him. Please accept our deepest sympathy --we are sorry to be out of town for the funeral and wake. Let us know if there is anything we can do. Love Don and Linda
