I used to go to Dick for answers to code questions as a young architect at SBRA. He was always cheerful, kind and helpful. I learned a lot from Dick. I was the keeper of all of his cost data books, written with his careful handwriting, after his retirement. I turned those in a couple of years ago to the Shepley archives as part of the firm's history. My sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers to his family.

It hurts to lose a friend and mentor even if one no longer sees him or her day to day. I could always count on Dick Tousley for helpful advice. I remember two things that Dick said that kept me out of trouble again and again.
1. When you are estimating it's good to have the right cost but not a disaster if it's not exactly right as there tend to be compensating balancing errors but you need to be very careful not to miss any items entirely, because that can indeed do in all your other careful work.
2. It's always advisable to do the best job possible. "Gary my boy, if you exceed your building's budget to do things right, your client will soon forget about it but if your/his building leaks he will never forget it."
It make me very sad to know that I have talked with Dick for the last time. I offer my deepest sympathy to his wife and family.

Dick's good cheer and sage advice was always to be counted on during his long stint at SBRA. My sincere and deeply felt condolences to his wife Locke and his family.
