Sally Walsh Obituary

Sally A. Walsh, 76, of Ocean View, DE, passed away on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 after a brief illness. She was born July 29, 1934 and spent her early years in Hingham, MA. After her graduation from Chestnut Hill College she taught in the Hingham school system until 1970. She received a Masters degree from Catholic University and a second Masters degree from Georgetown University. In 1970 she moved to Montgomery County, MD where she was a High School English teacher and drama coach, and subsequently Coordinator for Secondary English for the Montgomery County School system. She later worked at the Maryland State Department of Education. She retired in 1995 and moved to Delaware in 2001. There she became active in St. Anns Catholic Church in Bethany Beach. She was a mentor, read to the blind and helped with Meals on Wheels. Sally was preceded in death by her mother, Alice (nee Conway) and her father Bob Gorman, after whose death, she was adopted by Edward P. Walsh, also deceased. She is survived by her aunt, Mary Simpkins of Las Vegas, NV; her friend of 42 years, Joanne Busalacchi of Ocean View, DE; and many cousins and friends. Services were held in Ocean View, DE and Gaithersburg, MD. Donations may be made in her memory to Catholic Charities. Online condolences can be sent by visiting www.melsonfuneralservices.com.

I first met Sally in 1989 when I realized a longtime ambition and became an English resource teacher in Montgomery County under her supervision. The first summer our meetings were held in a portable classroom in the field behind Wootton High School. To me it was heaven, listening to Sally, being part of a wonderful group of smart, like-minded adults, grappling with ideas, talking about teaching. Sally was funny and wise and smart. She never "dressed for success," but she was truly successful. She was able to be a leader and at the same time laugh and see the irony of the human condition. It was a gift and a privilege to begin my career as an RT with her guidance. It was also fun.

I have tried in vain to contact Sally over the years but I guess when she moved to DE I had no chance...I am not surprised how active she remained in her retirement. Our relationship began at St. Paul's in Hingham. We were all in a wonderful youth group and of course there was always an annual One Act Play competition... I am hoping someone will read this and contact me. We were frequent guests in her home. Sally and her mother were our mentors...Great examples for the Catholic Youth of the Day.

Sally was one of the special people you are fortunate to have known. She first encouraged me to act in a play for St. Paul's parish in Hingham in @1960 and later was our drama coach at Hingham High. Her enthusiasm was contagious and it is no surprise that she was a positive influence on many lives over the ensuing years. All who met Sally were blessed.

Sally hired me to teach at Damascus High School many years ago. Her enthusiasm and love of the students was contagious. I remember her hightop pink tennis shoes she would occasionally wear to remind us all not take ourselves too seriously. The effort she put into producing the drama productions brought forth amazing performances from her students and much enjoyment for all. Sally gave me a nugget of great advice - "sometimes it is better not to have all the answers" Oh, so true.

When I think of the profound effect Sally has had on me and then think of ALL of the students she reached throughout her career, I am overwhelmed by the blessing of her life. Sally was my Hingham High drama coach and taught me a love and respect for theatre that I have cherished and enjoyed for 45 years. No one is better than Sally. I'll never forget her "volunteer" system. Also..."If you make mistakes, make 'em so I can hear them". My thoughts and prayers go out to all who know and love her.

As English coordinator in MCPS, Sally guided me when I was a new English resource teacher. She loved language, literature, and writing and new how to tell a good story. She also knew how to laugh and to make others laugh. I know her family and friends will miss her good company, big heart, and fine mind. My thoughts are with you all,
