Douglas Downes Obituary

Douglas Allen Downes, 73, of Negril Jamaica, formerly of Hudson, Stow, and Harvard, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at the Audy L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio, Texas on May 19, 2019. Doug, son of the late Wana (Lovelace) Downes, is survived by his greatest love and best friend, Molly McCree, his daughter Tanya Visconti of Marlborough, Massachusetts, his son Derek Downes of Maine and Jamaica, his step-son and daughters Marc and Deanna Paglia of Colorado and Khara Pittman of Florida, his brother and sister-in-law David and Sharon Downes, his sister Barbara Downes, all of Florida, Joya and Will Holden of Texas, and his grandchildren Isaac, Emmett, Johnnie, Mackenzie and Sadie. Doug spent his childhood in Hudson on and along the Assabet River. He cherished the feeling of freedom that came from growing up in a small New England town in the 1950's. A Vietnam veteran, Doug served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 - 1971. He returned to Massachusetts and set up shop in Hudson. With an artists eye and Dougs gregarious wit, Close-Up Photography preserved many beautiful memories for clients and friends across New England and beyond. It is an understatement to say that Doug loved life, he had larger than life dreams and he lived them well. He was predeceased by his friend Jim Walton. He leaves his pals Paul Jernberg, Lorene Jean and so many others with fond and ridiculous memories. A private memorial will be held in Jamaica later this year. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation toward a dream of your own (a charity of your choice).

Doug took care of my Aunt Susie (Molly) and I will always love him for that. He hosted me and my family in Jamaica for a trip of a lifetime, especially for my young sons Henry and Drew. He was a fast friend, an engaging host, a quick wit, and a gentleman. Sitting on the coast in Negril with a cold beer at sunset I remember thinking I wouldn't mind being Doug Downes. RIP, Doug, I'm glad to have known you.

Knew Doug for many years in Hudson and was one of a few people who visited me while living in Europe. although 7 years younger than him, he taught me a truly valuable phrase in life and that was,
"A closed mouth gathers no feet" and I have lived by it ever since! Party on Doug, it doesn't stop here!!

May 25, 2019

My deepest condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time. There are no words that can describe the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory because those who pass on "are precious in his eyes." Psalms 116:15; 1 John 4:9

Doug was such a true gentleman. I loved listening to his stories about his travels & adventures. He lived & loved life to the fullest! His love for Molly was so evident whenever you saw them together. I had the pleasure of seeing them whenever they came to MI. I will cherish my memories of time spent with them in Saugatuck.
Rest in Peace Doug. We'll miss you so!

I met Doug in Negril a number of years ago and enjoyed his friendship, crazy sense of humour, amazing cooking skills, and sense of wonder of the natural world. I will always have incredible memories of time spent at Windrush, dancing under the impossibly beautiful stars after amazing dinner parties, and playing bocce ball late into the night beside the wild ocean. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him, and most deeply,of course, his wonderful partner, Molly. Into the great mystery, dear Doug, blaze a trail for us all and may you Rest In Peace.

In Memoriam Dougie Downes.
Back in the day, when I was at Hallzers, he was my malt whisky buddy. From that he became my friend. I truly loved Dougie. You know someone is special to you when you go out into the deep West End at 4 a.m. to tow his truck from on top of a large stone. What? The road moved!
Janet and I stayed with him at Windrush for a time. We helped him entertain his "Russian" buddies from Kingston. Mad weekends of cooking and doing vodka shots for breakfast. Quiet nights as we sat under the stars and watched a thousand bats come out to feed on the "hundred year" plant that blossomed in his garden for a brief period of time. Sitting with him as he tried to get "that" lightning shot.
Too many memories to write here.
I am so sad that I waited a year too long to go back to see him. My condolences to Molly.
R.I.P Dougie. I will miss you forever.
