Loras Tangren Obituary

1930 - 2014
Loras Burke Tangren left this life on June 14, 2014 surrounded by his wife and children. He was born February 13, 1930 in Price, Utah to Loras G. Tangren and Miriam C. Redd. After serving a mission to Argentina in 1951, he attended Brigham Young University. In 1952 he met Ruth Lamar, fell in love with her Southern accent and they were married on July 31, 1953 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Burke and Ruth graduated together from BYU in 1954, Burke among the first graduates of the newly established ROTC Program. He entered the United State Air Force as a 2nd LT and retired twenty years later as a Major. Life in the Air Force afforded Burke and Ruth opportunities to live in five different states, in Japan and in the Azores Islands, giving them the privilege of making lifelong friends and the blessing of serving in many capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After retirement, Burke accepted a job with the Finance Office of the State of Utah. There he and Boyd Wagstaff created what was then called the "Gotcha" program which recouped millions of dollars for the state. Burke was devoted to his church and served in many callings, including a Bishop twice, a member of the High Council, Counselor in a Stake Presidency and at the time of death had served thirteen years in the Primary, first as a teacher and then as the Reverence Ranger. He loved the many children who shook his hand each Sunday as they entered the Primary room. In addition to his first mission, he and Ruth served as missionaries in Nauvoo, at the Joseph Smith Birthplace in Sharon Vermont, and in Toronoto, Canada with the CES program. He enjoyed driving the Courtesy Van from the airport to Temple Square, making 4,700 round trips before his health began to decline. Burke was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and his oldest child, David Loras.
He is survived by Ruth, his five living children - Linda and Steve Morgan, Cyndi Tangren, Donna and Kevin Waters, Douglas and Michelle Tangren, and Amy and Steve Herold. He leaves his much loved grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren with three yet to arrive, and a brother Boyd Tangren. Burke will forever be loved and missed by those of us who will one day be reunited with him.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Barton Creek Chapel, 640 South 750 East, Bountiful, where a viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services. Not sure what to say?

I am sitting here in London England on a mission and reading Burke's obituary. I sure do have some fond memories of Burke and his family history efforts. He was such a likable guy. Guess he still is. All the best to the Tangren's as you continue to prepare for the happy reunion.

Hi Ruth,
I dare not miss this opportunity express my love and gratitude to you and your family for the many experiences we have shared over the years. Especially the time in Vermont, where we served together on a daily basis. Your faithful and effective service, along with a close friendship will always be cherished. I consider you and Burke as a choice and faithful friends, and look forward as you do, Ruth, for the time we will be reunited with our loved ones after the test of mortality.
Until then, my love and prayers are with you, wishing you comfort and happiness with the sure knowledge that a happy reunion will surely come.
Best Regards, Reed Harding

Dear Ruth,
I only learned about Burke's death today, and was unable to attend his viewing. I was so sorry to hear about it, he was such a wonderful man. I was always proud that we were both Redd's and he would call me cousin. I still have a life history he wrote of Solomon Chamberlin and have used it and enjoyed reading it. God bless you and your family,
Melanie Lewis

Dear Ruth and Family,
We were saddened to hear about Burkes death. We had so many good memories of him and your family and missed you all so much when you moved from Tucson. I enjoyed the Stake calling Burke extended to me when he was in the Stake Presidency. He was a kind and helpful man. He will be missed by all who knew him. Wishing you comfort and the strength you need to get through your loss. Our love and prayers are with you. Donna and Ken Haymore

35 years ago I showed up at the state capitol building to work for the state legislature. I had schooling to do statistical analysis but no way to use a computer. Burke took me under his wing and helped me to learn how to use the program he used for the GOTCHA program and helped me get access to the state computer facility so I could do my job.

I will eternally be grateful to Burke for his kindness to and patience with me, a rookie at his first real job after graduation.

From then on, he was always my friend.

I have never known in my life a man who was so compassionate everywhere he went. I never heard him say an unkind work, or do an unkind thing. He always encouraged me to be positive, no matter what my circumstance was. I was blessed to have him as my father and he took a small piece of me with him when he left; I love you daddy and I will meet you on the other side!!! Thank you for being so proud of me!

Burke's kindness and gentle heart will be missed. He lived his faith and still his eyes sparkled with mischief and fun. His impact on my family was enormous and I am grateful to have been a part of his extended family.

I was saddened to read of Burke's passing, but I know he is in a wonderful place. I worked with Burke for a number of years at the Division of Finance with the GOTCHA program. He was always cheerful and kind. I know how much he will be missed by his family and friends.
