Lawrence Hulefeld Obituary

Dr. Lawrence Charles Hulefeld of Marblehead, Massachusetts died unexpectedly at the age of 75 on October 15, 2018. He was playing the game he loved, teeing off at the Dooks Golf Club in Kerry, Ireland, on the first full day of a bucket list trip with two of his dearest friends. Moments earlier, Larry had observed, this looks like heaven. Though devastating to those he left behind, it was a fitting end to an extraordinary life of love and service. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Larry was one of seven children of Anne and Frank Hulefeld, Jr. He returned regularly and remained close with his siblings Tom, Jim, Ed, Rick, Anita, and David, and their families. While visiting, Ladou would indulge in his local favorites of Skyline Chili and Graeters ice cream. No summer was complete without the annual pilgrimage to the Hulefeld family summer camp on Torch Lake in Michigan, where he spent long days with loved ones water skiing, sailing, fishing, playing shuffleboard, and enjoying his mothers famed cherry cobbler. These roots firmly grounded Larry for a life of kindness, generosity, easy going humor, and love. His family doubled in size with his marriage on July 11, 1970 to Mary Susan Sacksteder, herself one of 10 children, from Adrian, Michigan, whom he met while attending Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. The sprawling Sacksteder clan quickly grew to love him as one of their own. In 1970, engaged but not yet married, Larry interviewed on a whim at Lynn Hospital, in Lynn, Massachusetts, for a position as an E.R. physician while visiting friends in Boston. Never one to ask for directions, he got lost on the drive back and found himself in Marblehead. Larry bought a sub from Marblehead House of Pizza, drove out to the lighthouse on a strangers suggestion, and lunched overlooking the harbor. Afterwards he called Susan to report he had found a job, and home. He would never leave. A co-founder of Greater Lynn Emergency Physicians, Larry would spend the next 48 years serving generations of patients at Lynn Hospital, Union Hospital, AtlantiCare Medical Center, and Lahey Clinic North. He was the consummate physician, a beloved colleague, staff favorite, and constant presence in the lives of his work family. He was as committed to his coworkers as his patients. Indeed, without fail, he reported dutifully to every shift - day or night - with a dozen doughnuts in hand. As others began counting down to retirement, Larry hoped aloud that he could keep going. He retired twice, only to return, and ended his days providing urgent care at Lynn Community Health Center for the past several years. His professional legacy is one of service, joy, and dedication. He worked until the end, and he loved every second. Ultimately, however, his truest devotion was to his family: his wife of 48 years, Susan, his sons Sam, Rob, and Ben, and their families, including daughters-in-law Gina, Molly, and Karen and his five grandchildren Isabelle, Ava, Julia, Charlotte, and Marina. He was a loving husband and incomparable father and grandfather. ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to A celebration of life service which will be held at the Eastern Yacht Club, 47 Foster St., Marblehead on Saturday, November 3rd from 12 noon to 3 P.M. The Hulefeld family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers or other condolence gifts that donations be made to Lynn Community Health Center, P.O. Box 526, Lynn, MA 01903 (www.lchcnet.org/donate) or to Children, Inc. 333 Madison Ave, Covington, KY 41011 (http://www.childreninc.org/ support-us/donate/). I'm so sorry to hear about Dr. Hulefeld's passing. To the Hulefeld family: you may not remember me, but I lived down the street and babysat for Sam and Robert before moving away at age 16. The boys were about 5 and 2 at the time. I sure learned a lot about small children and their aversion to bedtime! Dr Hulefeld would walk me home afterward and, while I was very shy at the time, he'd get me talking by asking: "So, what mischief did the boys cause tonight?" I remember how he was thoughtful, funny, and patient during these conversations. He was just a great guy, and you were all just a wonderful family. Sometimes you never know the impact you have on someone- know that my experiences babysitting two little boys and those conversations I had with your Dr Hulefeld stayed with me as I grew up and settled on my career path- as a child psychologist.

Hello Sam. My dear friend. My old college roommate. My condolences to you and your family. I remember your fathers tremendous heart and love when I met him when I lived with you in Santa Barbara.

I remember thinking that you likely got your huge heart your great love for people, and your incomparably strong moral compass from your father. I am sure you will miss him dearly, my friend.

All the best to you, Rob, and Ben. Hug your mother.

If only we could go back and spend an evening after getting a midnight snack from the Chevron in Goleta, talk about life, and revisit the treasured memories you have of your father.

All the best. Love you. Miss ya. May God bless your family.

Susan, Ben and family, we just found out that Larry passed away. We are devastated to hear the horrible news. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. It sounds like it was very similar to my fathers passing. He was an active, assumed healthy 75 yo man that died in his chair watching TV. It was such a shock and so horrifically traumatic to all of us left behind but we reason that it was a beautiful way to go for a beautiful man and I know that is the case with Larry. We send our deepest sympathies and this time of great Loss. The Covington Family

I was blessed to work with Larry for many years as an RN in the Union ED. A fixture at Union, Larry will be remembered for his consistently calm demeanor and of course the donuts. The Dunkin Donuts were more than just a gift to the staff at the beginning of each shift; the box sitting on the counter at the nurses station announced to the unit that "Larry is here". No doubt a huge void has been created in your family, but Larry's legacy is a great one; the family he loved so much and the lives he touched during his long career. Please accept my sincerest condolences. God speed Larry

Mr. Hulefeld used to frequent the Driftwood in Marblehead where I work. He sat at the counter and always would order two blueberry pancakes and sausage- always was as nice as can be. When I last saw him he told me about his upcoming trip to Ireland, he was so excited. I am extemely saddened to hear this news, and he will certainly be missed down at the Driftwood! My condolences to his family and friends. Xoxo

I met Dr. Hulefeld when I was rushed to the ER so depressed I wanted to harm myself.... He sat with me and talked to me and let me cry my eyes out. He kept checking up on me until I was able to leave, this was over 16 years ago so he surly changed my life. The world will miss him, I surely will.

Larry and I began work at the Lynn Hospital Emergency Department in 1970. In the 40 plus years that followed, I have been fortunate to count him as colleague and friend. He was a compassionate physician, a supporter of nurses and hospital staffs, and an advocate for patients. He was deeply respected for his medical work, and will be remembered as a good man, loyal to his family and passionate for improving the health care of the community. He enjoyed life, was engaging and humorous, and committed to help others. His passing leaves a void that will not be soon filled. And he will not be forgotten by those who knew him. Helen and I, along with Matt and Emily send our sincere condolences to Susan, Sam, Rob, Ben and their extended families.
