I've know Lennie from many years ago, since the Gross family(mine), and the Sogoloff family are related by marriage and share some of the same family members. Back in the early 1970's, I visited Lennie's On The Turnpike and Lennie's on the Village Green. I've never forgotten those times, and how Lennie came over and greeted us. Some memories never fade. Not Lennie, that's for sure.

I made my first visit to Lennie's on the Turnpike when I was 19. I ordered ginger ale and looked forward to listening to the first rate jazz artists Lennie hired. When I moved to Marblehead, I volunteered for the Marblehead Jazz group and wound up meeting Lennie at the UCC. As usual he would entertain all of us with his wit and story telling and livened up the place before the music began. Arlene Craig

I shall never forget the wonderful times on the turnpike and Lennie's hospitality. He was friend,a teacher and a great motivator. I will always remember the night he first introduced me to Buddy Rich. As a young jazz drummer it was a dream come true. Thank you Lennie, I love you.

Leanne, Mike, Nicole, Mathew and family-We are so sorry for your loss. Mr. Sogoloff was such a warm, loving father and grandfather...it was obvious that he lived for his family. He was so proud of you and interested in everything you did. We enjoyed meeting him in Vermont; and will keep your family in our prayers.

I have such great memories of going to Lennie's on the Turnpike while in high school. Lennie loved having us young folks come for the jazz, (and the roast beef sandwiches!) and he took great care of us - nurturing our love of the music. What a lovely man - he was a true mensch. When I saw him again 10 or 15 years ago, he remembered me right away - amazing! He will be greatly missed.

I worked with Lennie at Sunglass Hut, I was probably 19-20. My parents were friends of his and they lived overseas. He took me under his caring wing. We enjoyed lunches together, and hours and hours of working together where I heard story after wonderful story. Lennie, thank you for being there and sharing. It was a pleasure to know you.

Many happy hours at Lenny's on the Turnpike, in the audience of Alan Dawson (my teacher at the time), Sonny Rollins, Phil Woods, Joe Bucci & Joe Riddick, and so many others. RIP, Lenny. And thank you!

I worked at Lennies for a while. My parents knew Lenny well. My Dad went to school with him. That's how I got a job there. I worked with Joe Babtista there and his girlfriend Pat. I parked the cars of famous people as well as the crowd...I met and worked with Sparky Lyle there. Now a Lawyer Billy Pasquinna made the roast beef sandwiches. I was 17 years old and worked there 3 Summers & Winters. I was there at the right place at the right time. I met Roland Kirk (At 19 he taught me the "Talking Flute"), Herbie Mann, Charles Lloyd, Buddy Rich, Buddys daughter, Irwin Corey, Avedis Zildjian,Turly Richards and a million more. I learned a lot about clubs and the music business there. Too many stories to mention...I'll just say... " Thank you for all the BRIGHT MOMENTS you gave me & my family Lenny"... A true icon! I went to his club in my youth and saw so many huge stars. To this day, I play music because of his influence. I worked with Lennie at Empire and Sunglass Hut. He was a true gentleman, a warm, friendly and funny guy! God bless you my friend. Steve Lemack

Lennie spent his last years in our facility, where he continued to "book" acts. We enjoyed great musical numbers and entertainment...how lucky we were! He even did the introductions. Lennie was also a big Red Sox fan and we spent many an hour watching and discussing the games. What a great life! I will keep Lennie and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

I will never forget how Lennie graciously agreed to narrate a jazz concert we produced at Danvers High School in 1965. He took a Friday evening away from the club to sit on a stool and relate his friendships with the giants of jazz as we played examples of their music. And later, I spent many nights at the club indulging a lifelong passion for the music Lennie promoted. A great man is missed!

"Adam, I was saddened to hear of your dad's passing. I remember some wonderful nights at the club and Lennie always was around to welcome people and make sure they were comfortable. One memory was a cool conversation with Dizzy Gillespie after his last set. As a fellow barman, I hope you were able to make your dad a "Lennie's on the Turnpike Coktail." Thanks for some great musical memories Lennie."

I worked at Sunglass Hut with Lennie. He was a great man and I was honored to have him as a friend and mentor. He introduced my wife and I to Jazz and we always think fondly on the shows we attended with Lennie. He was one of my first calls when my daughter was born. We are truly saddened by his passing and will keep him and his family in our prayers.

I had the opportunity and great pleasure of caring for Lennie. He kept me on my toes, always had a joke and a passion for life. I am deeply saddened and am thinking of you all during this difficult time. Lennie was an inspiration to us all.

Hey, Lennie...we got the collage to a good place where it will be available for future generations to view and appreciate, just like you wanted! Thanks for introducing me to the world of live jazz when you and Joe hired me the week I turned 21. The great memories that have lasted a lifetime are unique and priceless, just like you! Lennie was a legend in jazz circles, having given so many performers a start at his club that it would be enough to fill a book. He was always kind, considerate and compassionate to those who worked for him. May the legend long live on and may he rest in peace.

I was so sorry to hear of Lenny's passing and my deepest sympathies go out to Lenny's entire family. I was a regular at Lennie's on the Turnpike in the sixties and early seventies and knew him well. To show the respect Lenny carried in the jazz world, as Lenny himself would tell the story, the late great Buddy Rich did a month-long international tour in the late sixties and when he returned to the United States, as soon as he got off the plane the first stop he insisted on making more than any other big jazz venue in the country was a gig at at Lennie's on the Turnpike. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed.

Dear Leanne, Karen, and Adam,
Please accept my sincerest condolences on your father's passing. I will always have very fond memories of his nightclub....one of the very best in the country. Lennie was very well respected among jazz musicians and his customers. I'll always remember him for his kindness and sharp wit. He was one of my heroes. When I was in college, he arranged for me to interview the musicians for my radio show and I'll always be grateful for his friendship.
Sincerely,
Malcolm Alter
