Kenneth R. Egan

Kenneth R. Egan of Marshfield passed away suddenly on January 30, 2021, at the age of 78. Beloved husband of 51 years to Jacqueline (Gamble) Egan; loving father of Kristin Dewey and husband Frank of Marshfield, Laurel Egan Kenny and husband Jay Kenny of Marshfield, Kenneth F. Egan and wife Effie of Bridgewater, and Michael Egan and wife Beth of Marshfield; cherished "Papa" of Kate, Lizzie, Kenneth G. Jack, Aiden, Christopher, Michael Jr., Ryan, Andrew and Matthew. Dear brother of Patricia Daley and her late husband, Frank Daley of North Andover and Cheryl Getty and husband Robert of Reading; Kenneth also leaves two nieces and one nephew. Ken was born in Quincy to the late Francis J. and Irene V. (DiBona) Egan, whom he lost in early adulthood. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1961 and earned an associate's degree from Newbury College. His most famous stories from his teen years involved his close knit group of friends from the neighborhood, his extended family, and of jumping into the Quincy Quarries and off the Fore River Bridge. Ken was very proud of his service in the U.S. Navy, where he served in Patrol Squadron Twenty-One as an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Technician Petty Officer Second Class, at the start of the Vietnam War, from 1962 to 1966. Home port was Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine and his service overseas included deployments to Keflavik, Iceland; Rota, Spain; Sigonella, Sicily; and Lajes, Azores (Portugal). He also spent time in Scotland, Cuba, and Norway, which he said was one of the most beautiful places on earth. Ken enjoyed sharing the stories of all the amazing places he was privileged to have experienced. Following his military service, Ken began his career at a radio station in Hingham, then took a role at Polaroid, where he was honored to work on some of the most innovative projects of the day and retired after 35 years as an Instrumentation Specialist Technician with the company. Ken was a doting and hands-on husband, father, and grandfather and was very protective of his family. His children enjoy warm memories of outings to Nantasket Beach and Paragon Park, and summer evening trips to get ice cream cones. Even when his children had grown and started their own families, he was always on the go, making the rounds to each of their houses on a daily basis to check in and lend a hand if needed. He was extremely proud of all his children in their successful careers, Kenny and Michael are both Police Officers, Laurel's communications business, and Ken was an integral part of Kristin's local real estate brokerage company. One of his favorite things to do was to attend his grandchildren's sporting and school events. He was a regular figure at the local hockey rinks and baseball fields, soccer fields, lacrosse fields, gymnastic tournaments, and musical performances, wearing his jacket that had "Papa" embroidered on the sleeve. Ken was also an avid golfer and was a regular on the Senior League at Green Harbor Golf Course. Ken could be found every morning at Starbucks drinking coffee with his crew. He loved the outdoors and could often be found working in the yard, right up to the day before he passed away. His giant heart, twinkle in his eyes, and sense of humor were unforgettable to everyone he met. His family is heartbroken, but comforted by the beautiful memories he created for them. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2021 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 8, 2021 at 10 a.m. in St. Christine Parish Church, 1295 Main Street in Marshfield. Interment will be in the Couch Cemetery.
