Julius Barthoff Obituary

Julius Barthoff, age 100, of Needham, died April 29, 2010. He was the husband of 66 years to the late Ellen (Wexler) Barthoff. Mr. Barthoff was born in Chicago, IL, where he graduated from John Marshall Law School. Despite his severe hearing loss, he was always active in civic affairs. Before moving to MA, he lived in Tucson, AZ; in Oberlin, OH where he served on the public library board and in Park Forest, IL where he was elected to the school board and also helped to organize one of the first non-rural 4-H Clubs. As an advocate for the hearing impaired, he supported efforts to install assistive listening devices in public venues. He also worked to raise public consciousness about better communication with the hard of hearing and the risk to everyones hearing from noise pollution. Last November he was the oldest recipient of Oticons Focus on People award for life-long advocacy for the hearing impaired. He is survived by his daughters, Toby Sandler and her husband Louis of Needham and Sue Weidenbaum and her husband Kevin of Oberlin, OH. Also survived by three grandchildren, Harry Sandler, Aliza and Shira Weidenbaum, several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held June 6 from 1-2 PM at Temple Beth Shalom, Needham and afterwards at the home of Louis and Toby Sandler. Memorials may be sent to Project Bread or the Home for Little Wanderers.

Although I only had the opportunity to meet Mr. Barthoff at lunch here at North Hill when he came to visit with us and afford us the opportunity to hear about his life, I am feeling very sad to hear of his death and want to extend my condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Barthoff clearly made so many contributions and seemed to have tireless energy for what he believed in and felt was important. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time. I feel honored to have met Mr. Barthoff. Alice L. Rose

I am honored to have met Julius in the last year of his life. When I met Toby and Julius, I felt like I had known him forever. I promised him lunch and did not follow through. I was taught an important lesson by him, that although his life was long, time is short. He visited our school and brought wisdom, humor , hope and a sense of history to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children from age three to twenty-two. He was a magnificent teacher, as the best ones teach by example. Julius is an inspiration to me in that he contributed to society every day of his life.
The Barthoff family is rich with a father, who lead the way and set an example for many. I used to admire Hollywood Stars and Sports Figures as celebrities and heroes. The Real Heroes of this world are named Julius. I believe that our lives do not end, in that our spirit and energy continue but in a different form. On those special days in my life, I will feel his smile and his commitment to all people, regardless of their different abilities. Julius Barthoff you made a lasting impression, May Your Spirit Soar!
