Eivind Sohoel Obituary

Eivind Olav Sohoel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather of Brewster, MA, age 77, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 3, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on September 21, 1933 in Oslo, Norway, the son of the late Gunnar Kristian and Eli (Magnussen) Sohoel. Eivind is survived by his wife, Marilyn Monzeglio Sohoel and three children and a daughter-in-law; Deborah Sohoel-Goldberg of Yarmouth, MA, Robert Lamson (Alyson) of Medway, MA, Kristin Sohoel-Smith (Geoffrey) of Arizona, (James Goldberg) of Yarmouth and(Marianne Sohoel) of Sweden. He leaves nine grandchildren; Grace Sohoel-Goldberg and Alex Goldberg, Matthew and Madeline Lamson and Casey and Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, Jessica, Sara and Sofia Sohoel and two great grandsons of Sweden. He was predeceased by a son, Morten Sohoel, a daughter, Nina Nilsen, and his siblings Maria Jacobsen, Harrald Sohoel, and Gunnar Sohoel of Norway. Eivind served in the Norwegian Army. He was an engineering graduate of STATENS TEKNOLOGISKE INSTITUTT, Norway with experience in rotating machinery failure analysis. Industries he has served included aircraft, chemical, hydro and nuclear power, mining, paper, printing and shipping. The main focus of his effort was on predictive and preventive maintenance for rolling element bearings. Sohoels work as a consultant for IKO of Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden, and the firm A.P. Moller led to the development of his patented Shock Pulse Method for bearing damage detection. Based upon his method, SPM Instrument AB (Sweden) was established with Sohoel serving as Director of Research, Development and Production. During his tenure as R&D Director, this method was developed into a number of practical field instruments and permanent monitoring systems. SPM grew into an international company with its inception in Sweden, and it was while Sohoel served as President and Director of Research and Development of SPM INSTRUMENT US (USA) in Marlborough, CT that he developed techniques for the measurement and analysis of lubrication, leading to a patent on this method in 1985. Mr. Sohoel is an internationally recognized expert in the field of rolling element bearing condition monitoring, damage detection, lubrication analysis, instrumentation and transducer design. Eivind was a former member of The Society of Lubrication Engineers and the Vibration Institute. After he retired to Cape Cod with his wife, Marilyn, they launched MILC CORPORATION, a consulting firm, and continued working in his field, as well as in that of medical instrumentation. On Cape Cod he found joy in hiking, sailing, spending time with family and tinkering in his laboratory, fellowship with members of The Vinland Lodge, a club with members of Scandinavian heritage. Our family would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Dr. Paul Mathew and the entire 8th floor of Tufts Medical Center Boston, MA, Hematology/Oncology staff, for the wonderful and dignified care and support he received. Visitation will be held on Saturday September 17, beginning at 9am and concluding with a celebration of his life at 10am at Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Dr., South Yarmouth, MA.
