Irene A. Luebke-Staempfli, was born October 24, 1927, passed away on February 20, 2021 at age 93. Irne and her beloved twin brother Fredi grew up in the town of Meisterschwanden, in Switzerland. As a young woman, she was a secretary in the numbered accounts section of a bank in Zurich. In 1955, she traveled to Denmark for a language course. It was here that she met David Luebke from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who proposed to her after they saw Richard Burton play Hamlet at Elsinore Castle. Irne, David, and their four children moved between Europe and Bethesda, Maryland for many years because of David's work for the Federal Government. In 1985 the couple retired to Brewster, where Irne made many friends through her garden and bridge clubs, and the Cape & Islands Chamber Music festival. She was an expert knitter, weaver, and basket-maker. For 30 years she volunteered as a book-mender at the Brewster Ladies Library, and she was very proud of her place on the honored volunteers plaque in the library lobby. Irne is survived by her four loving children, Tina, Felicity, Ned and Jennie, five grandchildren, a great grandson, and a half-finished pair of socks for Ned. A celebration of her life will take place on October 24, 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brewster Ladies Library.
