Joseph A. Skaff

Joseph A. Skaff, age 85, of Falmouth, passed away peacefully at Atria Briarwood on Thursday, June 7, 2018, after a long period of failing health. He was the devoted husband of Jean Carleton, his beloved wife of 27 years, who predeceased him in November 2017. Throughout their marriage, Joe and Jean travelled extensively and visited countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. They enjoyed international cuisine and became accomplished chefs who shared their love of food with family and friends. Born in Quincy, the son of the late Maroun and Najla Skaff. Joe dedicated his life to learning and service to others. After graduating from high school he entered Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass. In 1954 he joined the Congregation of Holy Cross and completed his theological studies in Washington, D.C. After ordination, he was assigned as a missionary in Dhaka, Bangladesh and served there for 5 years, after which he returned to Stonehill College where he spent the rest of his career as Professor of Religious and Islamic Studies. While at Stonehill College, he completed graduate studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He was also a member of the Rhode Island Air National Guard where he served both as a chaplain and Islamic expert. He retired in 1992 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Joe is survived by his brother Raymon Skaff of Quincy and also survived by his nieces and nephews Christine, Marie, John, Joseph, and Michael Skaff and Julia Sullivan and Matthew Carlton. He is also survived by his loving Skaff family, Carleton family, and many dear friends. Visiting hours will be Wednesday June 13, , 2018 at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street (Rte. 28) in Falmouth from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Interment to follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 2:15 pm.
