Albert Lawrence Polese Albert Lawrence Polese Albert Lawrence Larry Polese, went to eternal rest on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010. He was 93 years old. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Ida-Mae (Arena) Polese of Manchester-by-the-Sea, his daughter Marcia and her husband Charles McSweeney of Manchester-by-the-Sea, his son Albert Lawrence Polese, Jr. of South Grafton, Mass. and his late daughter Lisa Polese. He also leaves grandchildren: Anne McSweeney of Washington, D.C., Jill Magnuson and her husband Jeffrey of Sutton, Mass., Anthony Polese and Laurie Polese, both of Grafton, Mass.; as well as one expected great-grandchild, Mia Magnuson. He was also the brother-in-law of Adelaide Arena of Salem. A champion tennis player and avid golfer, Larry also leaves many close friends as well as numerous nieces and nephews from New England and New York. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Larry and his five brothers sang in the Choir at Christ Church and St. Johns Episcopal Church, and together they built a neighborhood tennis court. An excellent athlete in his youth, Larry qualified for Wimbledon, but was unable to travel to England to compete; he also pitched a no hitter as a pitcher for The Brooklyn Neverswets a semi-professional ball team. A winner of the Bausch & Lomb achievement award for excellence in science and mathematics, Larry graduated from City College of New York and worked for many years as a chemist for companies including Eastman Kodak, Monsanto, Virginia Dare, Masury-Young, and Borden Chemical Company, where he was the lead chemist in the development of Elmers Glue. A long-time resident of Saugus, he and his wife Ida, restored their colonial home, which was built in 1642; he served as a member of the Vestry at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Saugus, as well as on the Town Conservation Commission. He was also a founding member of the Nahant Country Club. During the last several years, he has resided with his daughter and son-in-law in Manchester-by-the-Sea and has enjoyed the company of many new friends at the Spectrum Adult Day Program in Beverly. A private burial will be held at St. Josephs Cemetery. A memorial service will be announced through the website of the Solimine Landergan & Richardson Funeral Home (
