Howard Long Obituary

Howard Wallace "Howie" Long, Ret. Saugus Police Dept. Chief of Inspectors, formerly of Saugus, died Thursday, June 17, 2011 at the Oxford Rehabilitation Center in Haverhill, following hip surgery and a lengthy illness with his daughter at his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Lois Jean (Pye) Long. He was born on March 11, 1932 to the late Ethel Jenny (Dukeshire) and Howard T. Long at the family home on Long Place in Saugus. Howie briefly worked for the family concrete business also located on Long Place before joining the military. He served with the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army Air Corp. during the Korean War. After completion of service for our country he joined the Saugus Police Dept. serving as Patrolmen, Safety Officer, Dog Officer, Narcotics Officer, Detective and Chief of Inspectors. When he retired from the Saugus Police Dept. after 28 years he moved to Seabrook, NH. He then worked for the Seabrook Greyhound Race Track as the Presiding Judge for over a decade. He was the loving father of Susan Jean Moutsoulas and Howard Wallace Long, Jr. Grandfather of George Moutsoulas, Alexander Moutsoulas, Irene Moutsoulas, Marissa Long & Megan Long. Great grandfather of Nicholas Schultz. Brother of the late Winola Williams, Gerald Long, Florence O'Connor & Mildred Long. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, brother's in-laws, sister's in-laws and by his dear friend Jean MacDougal and her family. Funeral Services will be held at the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., Saugus, Wednesday, June 22, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Tuesday, June 21, 4-8 p.m. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Stroke Association, 5575 Thompson Rd., Syracuse, NY 13214. I am so sorry for your loss. I served with Howie for my term of 24 years on the SPD. Learned alot, laughed alot. Our prayers are with you and your family at this trying tie.

Howie was a good man and a good cop. I learned a lot working with him at SPD. His contributions to the Town of Saugus are mostly unwritten, but he made a difference.
