Gene Jacobi Obituary

Gene Jacobi (May 13, 1940-February 13, 2015) passed away peacefully on February 13 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Judy Jacobi, his high school sweetheart, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage. Born in Passaic, New Jersey he was the son of the late Eugene and Lena Jacobi. He graduated from Clifton High School, studied engineering at M.I.T. where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, earned a degree in Sociology from Fordham University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and received a Masters Degree in Management Science from Pace University. Upon graduation from college, he worked for Bell Laboratories until he retired in 1992. His major assignments included recruiting graduates, heading their Affirmative Action program, providing the administrative support for the Bell Labs organization at the Western Electric facility in North Andover, and managing staff support for AT&T to local telephone companies throughout the U.S. He finished his career as the Director of Technical Business Operations as assistant to the Vice President, coordinating the administrative and human resources support for a technical organization of over 2,500 people. He was lured back after retirement as a consultant for a few years. After his retirement, he donated time as a volunteer to many organizations. He was on the Board of Directors of Symphony by the Sea; the Marblehead Museum and Historical Society; Dollars for Scholars , co-chairing their Million Dollar Celebration; the Marblehead Forever Committee, co-chairing Fort Sewall Day; and Friends of the Council on Aging. During the 350th celebration of the town, he served as chair of Incorporation Day and the 3 Pops Concerts at Abbot Hall. He served as President of the Marblehead Counseling Center and North Shore Elders. When the Boston Yacht Club asked, he stepped up to chair their Fundraiser for Wednesdays Child. Saturday mornings found him in charge of the Farmers Market Coffee stand. As a supporter of Care Dimensions, he co-chaired the Hospice Regatta twice. Not one to run for political office, he worked actively for many town efforts and candidates. His contributions to Marblehead were recognized by the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce when he was selected as their 2001s Man of the Year. In addition to his wife, Gene leaves a sister, Janice Martina of Shreveport, Louisiana, and a brother, Allen of Princeton, New Jersey. He also leaves many family members. He was blessed with the love and support of his wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ernie and Janet Remig, and his treasured nieces, nephews and friends for many years, especially during his illness. ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem, on Friday, February 20 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at Old North Church, 35 Washington St., Marblehead, MA on Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 A.M.. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Dollars for Scholars (formerly known as the Marblehead Citizens Foundation for need based scholarships), P.O. Box 4, Marblehead, Ma 01945 or Care Dimensions (formerly known as Hospice of the North Shore), 74 Sylvan Street, Danvers MA 01923. Dear Mrs. Jacobi,

There are no words to begin to convey this tremendous loss. How I have adored you both since I met you as a child. Mr. Jacobi was the kindest, most altruistic, dear gem of a man. I will never forget his laughter, the incredible freshly baked bread he would bring over to Mom and Dad's house, and the exquisite photographs he took at my sisters' weddings. My heart aches for you. During this most difficult of times, may you be embraced by the adoration and support we have for you. I love you so very much, Heather

Gene was a gem of a man. He was kind and, most importantly, genuinely nice. You know, when you're a selectman, if you're truly invested, you become close with your colleagues. You spend a lot of time with them and often disagree on one issue or another but usually the disagreements only extend to the issue at hand. We try to walk out as friends and we know each other's spouses and families. Judy and I were very close and we always worked together frequently. As a result, I met and talked with Gene hundreds of times. I used to call him the Town's 'official photographer' as he took pictures of the Board at almost every event. He often took pictures of my family and daughters at parades and at Christmas time would send us a few candid shots that we always enjoyed. Because of Gene, I have the best and one of the few good pictures I have with my late dad, Ben. I cherish it. Gene was the kind of a man that you always enjoyed seeing because he was soft-spoken, a kind soul and loved the old Town. I used to kid him and Judy about being 'New Jerseyite' off-islanders but there were not two people (regardless of family lineage including Headers) who loved the Town more. Judy and Gene visited and bought their house during the Blizzard of '78 as I recall when the Town could hardly move. Somehow it's fitting that he passed his mortal coil during all this snow as this is how he first recognized his love of the Town. You know, the older you get, the more you appreciate people in your life that are positive - Gene was one of those people. It's fitting that Hospice of the North Shore eased his passage from life to the ethereal realm because he and Judy volunteered much time to that organization which is a God-send to whoever has used it. Dying is different things to different people but Hospice is like a mariner with a compass when you are in rough seas, not sure of your course heading and need help to navigate the winds and waves of a perilous journey. He and Judy made a difference for that organization and it's fitting that it helped Judy and Gene navigate HIS journey. Native Marbleheaders are a notoriously stubborn, proud and bull-headed group as a whole on the outside but most are very soft on the inside especially about the love of this singular place that (at least to them) represents home, hearth and family. We have a tendency to rebut people who are from away and set our lineage above a lot of things when it comes to the dear old Town. You didn't have to do that with Gene and Judy because you knew they had the best in heart for a Town for whom we are only temporary custodians. Although it's not within my power, the best compliment that I could bestow on Gene is that of being a true 'Marbleheader' because that is what he was. Kathy and I will miss him and the spirit he lived every day. He was a good man and what more can anyone achieve. If your listening Gene, look to the horizon, set your sail, man the tiller, check your heading and aim for the light dear friend. A calm sea shall accompany you and hopefully we will see you on the other side. God Bless. Judy, we are always there for you and you know that. A promise made is always a promise kept.

February 15, 2015

Dear Judy,
Anthony and I are deeply saddened by your loss. Gene was a true gentleman, always a pleasure to spend time with. Our hearts are with you, who will miss him most.
