Susan Eisenthal Obituary

Susan M. Eisenthal, 77, of Sharon, died on Tuesday, December 16th at Massachusetts General Hospital after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on August 11, 1937 in Fremont, Nebraska, the daughter of the late Miriam Mitchell and the late Jack C. Mitchell, and step-daughter of the late Jane S. Mitchell. Susan grew up in Falls City, Nebraska. She attended Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in English from the University of Kansas in Lawrence. She also received a certificate in Communications from Simmons College in Boston. For many years, Susan taught English at Bridgewater State College and the University of Massachusetts at Boston. She retired from UMass/Boston in 2002. Susan loved reading, playing the cello, and spending time with her family and many friends. She was a member of Temple Kol Tikvah and Temple Sinai of Sharon. She leaves her husband of 54 years, Sherman, her sons David (and partner, Sandra Dickerson, and former wives, Talya Westbrook and Tobi Goldberg), Jonathan (and wife, Kathleen), and Joshua (and wife, Karen), her six grandchildren, Lily, Alexander, Abram, Jack, Sophie, and Madeleine, her sister, Mary Jane Nelson (and husband, Bill), her brother-in-law, Kenneth Eisenthal, her sister-in-law, Beatrice Aden, and many friends and a grieving community. Susan fought pancreatic cancer with courage and grace. One of her last hopes was that what was learned during her battle will help others who suffer from this dreadful disease. Her family and friends thank all of the people who gave her care over the past year, particularly those at Massachusetts General Hospital, including Emily Olson, Nurse Practitioner at the MGH Cancer Center. Funeral services will be held at Temple Sinai of Sharon on Friday, December 19, at 1:30 p.m. Memorial observances will be held Friday after the funeral at Temple Sinai, and on Saturday at 6 pm, and Sunday at Noon and 5 pm at Susans late residence. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park. Donations in Susans memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.

Sherman,
I was so sorry to hear of Sue's passing. I know that there are not words to express the deep sorrow and emptiness that you must be feeling; nor are there words to express the depth of the comfort that I wish to send to you. I have so many fond memories of both you and Sue, and I will cherish them always. It was such a pleasure to know Sue, and her warm, friendly smile was always welcome. She always took such an interest in what I was up to, and how my son Jami was doing. I always looked for the two of you when I was in Sharon at Temple Sinai. I missed you both at the lecture in my Mom's memory this past October, and now, unhappily, I know why. I am sending you much love and light, and hope that in time peace will come to you, and the memories that you shared will comfort you and bring a smile to your face.
I am visiting with my Dad in Israel right now, and he sends his condolences as well. We are holding you in our hearts.
With much love,
Linda Marshall and Stanley

Her heart and life was filled with music. She sang at my son Eric's Bar Mitzvah, and I sang at Joanathan's. "The memory of the righteous is for a blessing" . Iris Jacobs
