Anne Couch Obituary

Anne Winslow Couch, or Nancy, as she preferred to be known, passed away on February 16, 2014. She was surrounded by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Nathan Pierce Couch, and her children, Nathan Couch Jr. of Frisco, TX., Susan Lowell and her husband, Thomas, of Southborough, MA., and Christopher Couch and his wife, Janice, of Acton, MA. She also leaves behind 5 beloved grandchildren, Madeline Couch, Jacob Couch, Nathan Lowell, Claire Couch, and Jameson Lowell. Nancy is predeceased by her older brother, Dr. LeBaron "Barry" Carleton Colt Jr. who passed away on March 26, 2006 in Hartford, CT. It has been said that the wife is the heart of the home. No truer words could be spoken of Nancy. She was the heart of our family. She was a strong, intelligent woman who gave herself fully to all of her passions, whether it was her husband, children and grandchildren, her gardens, her Labradors, or her work. She was tireless and fearless. She was born on September 26, 1931 in Boston, MA. to LeBaron Carleton Colt and Josephine Jewell Colt. Nancy started her professional life as a nurse at Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. where she met her husband, Nathan, who was in medical school at the time. With the arrival of her first child she turned her energies to making a home for her family. When her family became of age Nancy began looking for new challenges and turned to contributing her efforts as a political campaigner at the state level in Massachusetts. She changed careers again to helping schools such as Concord Academy, from which she graduated in 1950, Dana Hall School, and, eventually, Harvard University, raising funds through their various development and alumni organizations. While we shall miss her greatly we celebrate her life and thank God that she was a part our lives. Memorial services will be scheduled in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Nancy's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation at www.alz.org. Duckett | J. S. Waterman & Sons, www.duckett-water man.com.

Today I learned that my dear former colleague, Nancy, had passed away in 2014. Even though it is 8 years since her passing, my heart goes out to her family and friends.

I will never forget her many kindnesses, whether gifting me with a copy of "Good Night Moon" for the arrival for my firstborn, or taking me to lunch to talk shop when I decided to jump into an advising role for a political campaign. Her counsel was wise (and sometimes colorful).

I can't tell you how it was so easy to become absorbed in the many tales from her storied upbringing, when fortunate enough to catch a coffee between discussing research. However, of the many powerful people who crossed her path, she was always a realist about the consequences of unchecked power and human nature - never one to sugar coat or be an unfettered idealist. Nancy was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stuffy environment.

She brought both fire and warmth to a conversation. She admired those who worked hard to get where they are, and had compassion for those who stumbled (but would never withhold her expectation for someone to do better).

I consider myself privileged to have known her, and will always count her as a dear friend.

And I will never forget her stories - they still inspire me to this day.

I wish I could have shared with you how much I appreciated the person you were and how grateful for the impact you had on my life.

May your memory always be for a blessing, Nancy. Thank you for being unapologetically yourself; I hope to be like you one day!

To Nancy's family, I send my sympathy to your whole family. I worked with Nancy at Harvard; she was respected by all of us who were fortunate enough to have received her friendship. God is in good company now.
