Andrew Smith Obituary

Former Butler University star center Andrew Smith, one of the main players on two teams that went to the national championship game, died Tuesday of cancer, according to ESPN. He was 25.

His wife, Samantha, confirmed his death via Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

"Andrew peacefully passed away in his sleep and in my arms as I told him I loved him this morning. Love you always, Smith."

The 6-foot-11 Smith started as a sophomore on the 2011 Butler team and averaged 8.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He played two more seasons at Butler, then went to Lithuania to play professionally. He came back home to Indiana in 2013 and was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January 2014.

Smith's former college coach, Brad Stevens, who is now the head coach of the Boston Celtics, did not coach his team's game last Thursday against Chicago. He went to visit Smith in the hospital in Indianapolis.

Smith starred at Covenant Christian High School in Indiana but wasn't recruited by many programs. He was one of three players in Butler school history to score more than 1,000 points and win more than 100 games.

"The Butler community is profoundly sad today with the news of Andrew's passing," the school said in a statement. "We saw the way Andrew fought on the basketball court, and we saw the way he fought for his health. In both cases, we saw the best of Andrew Smith. But that's what we always saw from Andrew. He gave his all, all the time."

Have prayed throughout this process and will continue to do so for Andrew's family, teammates and friends. While we are sad on earth, we rejoice at the homegoing of all who love and proclaim Jesus. His life was a testimony!

As a Butler graduate and former band member I have many happy basketball memories and continue to follow the team and its players. The 2010-2011 run is a treasured memory.

Andrew was in my public speaking class at Butler during the summer before his freshman year, and he was a gentle giant with a beautiful soul! One time before class, somehow, my chair rolled out from underneath me when I went to sit down. Before he laughed, he made sure I was ok & laughing at myself first. There aren't many 18 year olds who wouldn't laugh first, then make sure the person was ok. I also had the pleasure of doing a group project with him, along with a few other classmates, and we had many laughs while preparing for it. The Butler University family mourns the loss of Moose. I hope that knowing that his legacy will never die brings you peace and comfort. Sending my thoughts & prayers for strength, as well as all my love to Andrew's wife, parents, siblings, family, friends, and loved ones during one of the darkest times in your lives.

Samantha, Cancer take some so quickly they are gone before the fight begins and others fight a lifetime; yet this deadly disease leaves in its wake, pain undiminished. God sees your tears and the emptiness of your heart. May you find solace in prayer to the God of all comfort. He is your refuge in times of distress (Psalms 9:9).
