Josephine Gibbons

Josephine (Joey) Nugent Gibbons, 86, of Wayland, MA and formerly of Pittsfield, MA passed away, surrounded by her family, after a long illness on January 25, 2016. Born in Pittsfield, Joey was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Mary B. Nugent. She was also predeceased by her husband James F. Gibbons in 2002 and her sister Ann M. Nugent in 2008. Joey attended Pittsfield public schools and earned a BA in English from the College of Saint Rose and an MA in Education from North Adams State College. After graduating, she taught second grade at Hibbard Elementary School and shortly thereafter was married. Joey is survived by her three children, James M. Gibbons and his wife Clarissa of Essex Junction, VT; Joseph N. Gibbons and his husband Steve Wynne of Wayland, MA and Mary Sue Terranova and her husband Tony of Wayland. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Bridget and James Gibbons Junior, and James, Katie, and Julia Terranova. After raising her children, Joey returned to teaching at the Adult Learning Center in Pittsfield, where she was employed as a part-time teacher and volunteer for many years. She also volunteered at the Berkshire Medical Center, Sacred Heart Parish, Saint Marks School, and the Berkshire Athenaeum. In addition to giving of her time, Joey enjoyed reading, travel, music, and spending time with friends and family on Cape Cod. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 25, 2016 at Sacred Heart Church, 191 Elm Street, Pittsfield, MA.
