James Swarthout

James W. Swarthout, of Ithaca, Michigan passed away on October 10, 2025 in Union Township, Michigan at the age of 87. James was born the son of Francis and Lucille (Reed) Swarthout in Hillsdale, Michigan on August 8, 1938.
James was a devoted husband, father, and friend whose kindness and hard work left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. A skilled carpenter by trade, his work in construction took him across the country - from the forests of Washington State to the East Coast and back home to Michigan. His craftsmanship and dedication built more than structures; they built a lifetime of memories and pride.
James found his greatest peace in nature. He loved camping, sitting around a fire, and spending time outdoors, surrounded by the beauty he so deeply appreciated. Whether sharing stories with family or simply enjoying the stillness of the woods, he cherished every moment.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Swarthout and his children, Jim and Ashley Collins of Port Huron, Michigan, Tim and Jackie Swarthout of Graham, Washington, Debra Hudgens and Tim Hood of Columbia, Tennessee, Nick and Jennifer Swarthout of Farwell, Michigan, Jeff and Brianna Swarthout of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, 20 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Norman, Burnus, Wallace, and Larry Swarthout and his sister Kathy Pocan. His family and friends will remember him for his warmth, humor and the strength of his spirit.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the White Birch Lakes Club House in Farwell, Michigan on October 25 at 1:00 pm to honor and remember James' remarkable life and the love he shared with so many.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who were fortunate to know him.
