Frank Grasse Obituary

Frank John Peter Grasse, DVM was born May 27, 1949 in Cold Spring, NY, and died November 18, 2010 in Willits, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Dorothy Grasse, and his sister Patricia Miller. He is survived by his wife of thirty-three years, Frances, sister Pricilla Farrel, and many nieces and nephews.

After graduating from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1974, Frank began his career at White Ivie Veterinary Hospital in San Bruno where he practiced for three years before he purchased East Hill Veterinary Clinic in Willits from Dr. Eric Davis in 1978. Frank's skill, together with his profound compassion for his patients and their people allowed the practice to evolve from a primarily livestock practice to a full service hospital for small animal pet patients.

Frank dedicated his life to helping people and animals. In loving memory of his dear friend and study partner from veterinary school, Frank founded the Ivan G. Pollock Memorial Scholarship at UC Davis. When he was not working at the clinic or mowing the surrounding fields, Frank loved to restore classic sports cars and drive out highway 20 to the coast for breakfast or to UC Davis for continuing education. Frank wrote stories about his experiences as a veterinarian as a means to decompress and express himself. Vet Tales, a collection of his stories, presents a poignant, amusing, and surprising view of life as a small town small animal veterinarian, and was written under the pseudonym Charlie Freed. He was at work on a second book at the time of his death.

Frank touched the lives of thousands of people, and while he did many extraordinary things, he will be most lovingly remembered as the veterinarian who was, for thirty two years, always available for his clients and their pets. A memorial celebration of Frank's life will be announced

I didn't find out until yesterday the Dr. Grasse had passed away. He stopped by the donut shop in Redwood Valley shortly after Vet Tails was first published. I was working that morning; I think I got a copy of the book from him. It was a wonderful book; I struggled multiple times trying to write a letter to tell him how much it meant to me but was never successful. I regret that! Although I didn't know him I was enriched by his life and his experiences through his book.

I want to thank Francis for sharing Frank with all of us. When my husband was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, he offered his heart and help to him in a way that is rare and sincere. We cherish his letters and are thankful for knowing him.

I never got the chance to thank Dr. Grasse for making the decision to give Gremlin a second chance at life, how Gremlin has brought so much joy and laughter to a household that was heartbroken. Gremlin is Dr. Grasse's living legacy, his living proof of his intuition and compassion.
Thank you, Dr. Grasse.

In memory of our dear veterinary Frank Grasse, he was the most phenomenal person ever. He gave our beloved pets the most extraordinary care we could ever ask for. He treated the owners with compassion and understanding as well. Frank you will truely never know how many friends you really had. He really went beyond his call of duty. There will never be another vet to fill his shoes.
We think of you often and miss you every day.
God bless you.

Dr. Grasse was a hero to me and my many, many pets. He took me from beginning to end with some of them, always with a quite gentle kindness and understanding of such a loss. He was a rare breed of human being with such compassion for animals and their owners I don't know that we will ever see that again. I feel so very fortunate he was a part of my life. Truly he will be missed by so many in this community, but not forgotten!

Dr. Grasse was a rare veterinarian, particularly in this era. He was amazingly compassionate and service-oriented. I'll always love him for helping me with my cat, Chloe, in her final hours.

Francis and Family, It was a great shock for me to hear about Frank's death. I express condolences from the deepest strata of my heart. Frank was not only a great boss, but my mentor, teacher and I am honored to say a good friend. I am sure that each and every one of us thought the world of him and will miss him very much. He was admired and respected by all who knew him. Frank's death is a loss that is beyond repair and I pray that God gives you all the strength, courage and hope to get thru this trauma and the days ahead. With Sincere Sadness,

I met Dr. Grasse 13 yrs ago when my mother and I moved to Willits with our six cats. I don't think I have ever met a kinder man and considered him a good friend. He was there to lean on through the death of my mother and the deaths of 5 of our cats. There is a huge hole in the fabric of the community after his passing. It will take a long time for that hole to mend, if ever.

I was in shock when I found out last month that Dr.Frank had passed away. Such a great person and he deserved to enjoy many years of retirement. I've been bringing my pets to him since 2003 and he was always caring. The last time I saw him I had just bought 3 books of Vet Tails and he was so excited that I was sending them off back east to friends. I've read the book 3 times and hope that Frances publishes his second book. you will be missed and thanks for all you have done to the great community of Willits.

My deepest thank you to all who have shared memories of my brother Frank. Your kind words reflect warmly on Frank's contribution of loving care to each and every pet and empathy for their human companions. Although we have all been saddened by his death, let us fondly remember his quirky sense of humor and a life well lived.

Dr. Grasse treated my pets for over thirty years. Although I have lived in Willits since I was five, I don't recall seeing Dr. Grasse anywhere other than his office. Dr. Grasse, thank you for sharing your knowledge, dedication, compassion, and honesty with our community for so many years. You made a difference.

If the memorial celebration has not already been held, I would very much like to attend. Other classmates may also be able to attend and we would apppreciate knowing the details. If someone notifies me, I would gladly contact our classmates via our class website at

Frank and I were high school classmates. I did not know him well, but reconnected after I read some of his stories. When I lost my Springer Spaniel four and a half years ago to liver failure, he offered wonderful advice. Knowing that I will not see him again leaves me with a great sense of loss.
My sincere sympathy to Frances and his family.

Frank and I were classmates at Ventura High School, class of 1967. He was kind, soft spoken, a good friend, and fun to hang out with on campus. Our friendship was recently rekindled, via the internet and after 43 years, he was still the same Frank that I knew at VHS. Frances, you were blessed with Frank and he was blessed with you. We were all, indeed, blessed to have crossed paths with Frank.

Dr. Frank was a very special friend to our family and pets for many years. If he would have taken human patients, I would have been his first for sure. So sad to know we don't have him with us now. God bless

Frank was not only the best and most caring veterinarian I have ever known, but he was also a friend. As a friend, he instinctively knew when you were ready for one of his jokes or needed a shoulder to cry on. Heaven's gain is our loss.
