James Benson Obituary

James "Jim" D. Benson, 94, of Union City, IN, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2025, at his residence.
He was born on November 12, 1930, in Winchester to David F. and Lola Mae (Coddington) Benson. Jim was a 1949 graduate of McKinley High School. After school, Jim started working for Hinshaw Construction before starting his own construction business, J.D. Benson & Company, in 1959. He operated his business for 34 years before retiring in 1993. He was well known for his work and had built many homes in the area. Jim was a past member of the Winchester Lions Club and attended the Harrisville Congregational Christian Church. He had been involved with 6 mission trips to Haiti and was active with Men for Missions. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he liked to watch the Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis Colts, and Indiana Pacers on TV.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Patricia A. (Janney) Good Benson of Union City, a son, Kelly (wife Pamela) of Fort Collins, CO, a daughter-in-law, Lorinda (husband Phil) Lyons of Westfield, IN, two step-daughters, Karla (husband Dale) Mock of Warner-Robbins, GA, Karen (husband Aaron) Schafer of TX, and a step-son, Kyle (wife Heather) Good of Lynn. He had 6 grandchildren, Michelle (husband Brad) Harry, Stephanie (husband Bryan) Bailey, Jason (wife Brittany) Benson, Jonathan (wife Heather) Benson, Jeremy Benson, Amanda (husband Ryan) Visser; 4 step-grandchildren, Chaz (wife Kendall) Schafer, Ahnna Jones, Josh Good, and Jake Good; 18 great grandchildren and 2 step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Patricia Simpson of Stanford, KY; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Joan P. (Mangas) Benson, a son, Kenneth Benson; two brothers, Richard Benson, and Ralph Benson; three sisters, Melva Blocher Schwaberow, Mary Richardson, and Barbara Hinkle.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 12 at 12:00 p.m. at the Harrisville Congregational Christian Church with Pastors Eric Knight and Coleman Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester. Friends and relatives may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Harrisville Congregational Christian Church, or Men for Missions, with envelopes available at the church.
