John Rowan Obituary

1961-2025

John Thomas Rowan of Yorba Linda, CA, formerly of Winona, MN, died suddenly at his home. He was born in Winona, MN to James F. and Bernardine M. Degnan Rowan. John attended Madison and Cathedral Schools and Cotter High School. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, and graduated from Winona State University, summa cum laude. John was named the outstanding chemistry graduate at WSU by the American Institute of Chemists and received a Nobel Hines scholarship to further his studies in Analytical Chemistry at Iowa State University.

John's career included time working for Lockheed and the Environmental Protection Agency, based in Las Vegas (usually on the road). He also worked for King County and the Municipality of Seattle. Most recently, he was a Senior Chemist with Element where he was a pioneer in trace metals analysis.

John is survived by three sisters: Mary (Richard) Harrity of Hudson, MA; Charity (Brian) Floen of Rochester, MN; and Margaret (Mark) Daly, Minnetonka, MN. He is also survived by four nieces: Bridget Floen and Anne, Ellen, and Megan Daly; three nephews: Matthew (Paige) Floen; and Michael and Daniel Daly; and two great-nieces. He was predeceased by his parents.

A wake (9:30 a.m.) and funeral (10:30 a.m.) will take place Saturday, October 4, at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, MN. Burial at St. Mary's Cemetery of Winona. Memorial contributions at Unbound.org, or sent to Unbound, 1 Elmwood Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66103.
