Adelaide Ashburn Obituary
Adelaide Ashburn passed away on November 4, 2025, in McKinney, Texas. She was born in Forsyth County to the late Harry Graham Petree Jr. ("Harry Junior") and Mary Cecil Shropshire Petree.
Adelaide was a member of the last graduating class from Rural Hall School in May of 1955. She was a Junior Marshall of her class and a member of the cheer squad. She attended Draughon's Business College in Winston Salem, NC where she earned her degree in accounting. She worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and later with Hanes Hosiery for many years until she retired.
The beach and National Parks were her "go to" spots to relax and enjoy family. Myrtle Beach was a yearly vacation for many years and holds fond memories for the Ashburn family. Boating and water skiing were also a family favorite past time.
Adelaide was a faithful member of the Rural Hall Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible classes for many years. She attended until her health began to fail that led her move to McKinney, Texas to be closer to her son Stan and family. She expressed her love not only for her friends and family, but for all the stray, hungry animals that showed up on her doorstep over the years. She allowed many to call her house home. She loved her family and dogs and mentioned all of them in her final days. COMPLETE PEACE came over her entire body anytime we spoke about heaven and Jesus with her. It was undeniable she had the Perfect Peace only Jesus can bring. (Isaiah 26:3) She knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior and as a good friend of ours said, "She is not gone, she just changed addresses. We will see her again!"
In addition to her parents, Adelaide was preceded in death by her sweet daughter Stephanie Rae Ashburn, sister Deborah Petree Tidwell, brother Graham M. Petree. She is survived by her husband of almost 69 years Frank Ray Ashburn, son Stanton P. Ashburn (Jana) of Lucas, TX, grandchildren Nicholas M. Ashburn (Marissa) of Richardson, TX, Travis M. Ashburn of Seattle, WA, Rachel D. Bond (Connor) of Fort Collins, CO, Kyle M. Sheehan of Lucas, TX, Ryan B. Sheehan of Lucas, TX and great granddaughter Evelyn M. Ashburn of Richardson, TX.
There will be a graveside service conducted at the Rural Hall Memorial Park (531 Tobaccoville Road, Rural Hall, NC 27945) by Dr. Wesley McCarter on Saturday December 6th at 10 a.m. The family would like to thank the love and support that many of you have given Frank and Adelaide over the years. Neighbors, pastors, nieces, nephews, and organizations like Visiting Angels have been crucial to them during tough times. Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus.
