AGNES DAVID Obituary

DAVID WINSTON-SALEM Agnes David September 24, 2012 Agnes David, 97, passed away at Clare Bridge of Winston-Salem on Sept. 24 after a long and full life. She will be missed by her family and this community. Mrs. David came with her husband Andrew to this country in 1940 from Hungary to escape unrest and make a better life for her family. She started as an upholstery seamstress in New York and moved to Winston-Salem in 1946, when her husband transferred here to help open Western Electric. She taught kindergarten and became a child development consultant. She leaves a legacy of passion and courage for her children and their families. She is preceded in death by her husband (Andy) and two sons (Ray and Roger). Surviving are her son Chester (Susan), Patty, four grandchildren (Josh, Jon, Allison and Nancy) and seven great grandchildren (Mikayla, Orion, Brian, Skyler, Sophie, Anna and Megan). Mrs. David was a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church. She was a teacher, a daycare pioneer, an advocate of better understanding between races, one of the founders and executive director of Associated Artists, one of the founding members and executive director of Shepherd Center of Winston-Salem, founder of the Arts Council, consultantto the Northwest Child Development Council, docent at Reynolda House, director of the Urban Coalition Daycare Center and executive director of Day Care at Experiment in Self-Reliance. She pioneered the first licensed daycare centers in Winston-Salem. She was cited volunteer of the year. Mrs. David was best known for the past 20 years as a prolific exhibiting artist. "Painting has done a great deal for my soul. When I am painting, I don't know when it's time to eat or sleep." Mrs. David lived with chutzpa and risk. She was a trailblazer who forged new trails to make a better world, possessing a stubborn pride in one's ability to transcend the present. A memorial service will be held at St. Anne's Episcopal Church on Friday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Shepherd Center of Greater Winston-Salem, 1700 Ebert St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 http://www.shepherdscenter.org/donate.html.
