Mrs. Alberta Jeannette Brown Wilkins received her well-earned rest on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004. Mrs. Wilkins was the daughter of James L. and Reater Banks Brown. She was married to Oscar C Wilkins Sr., who preceded her death in death in 1994. Alberta is the last of five siblings, including Francis, Edward, Cornelia, Alice Mae Brown and Mary Etta Brown Mason, who preceded her in death. Born March 26, 1915, Mrs. Wilkins was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem and graduated from the former Winston-Salem Beauty College. She operated Alberta's Beauty Salon for several years before beginning her second career at the former Winston Mutual Life Insurance Co., retiring after more than 25 years of service. Mrs. Wilkins was an active member of her community and the First Baptist Church of East Winston until an early decline in health prohibited her from participating in the activities she dearly loved. Even in her poor health, "Momma" continually helped her many "children" and friends. Loved by many, she was a devoted mother, aunt and friend. Mrs. Wilkins leaves a loving family to cherish her memory including a loving son, Oscar Wilkins of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece and committed daughter-in-law, Dr. Sylvia A. Mason of Durham and Edna Wilkins of Winston-Salem; a nephew, William N. (Bonnie) Mason Jr. of Winston-Salem; a niece, Doris Wilson of Hamden, Conn.; a great-niece, Stephaniea Mason of California; a sister-in-law, Effie Brown-Thomas of Detroit, Mich.; a cousin, Anna Price of Reidsville; a special and caring friend, Clem Roundtree; and a host of other faithful friends. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. "Don't be troubled. You trust in God... There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." - John 14: 1-3. Rest well Mother, Aunt and Friend. Lovingly submitted, the Wilkins-Mason family. (Russell)
