Mr. Charles "Tom" Preston Sr., 74, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Forsyth County to Herman Fenton and Ila Mae Sprinkle Preston. Mr. Preston graduated in 1951 from Hanes High School and in 1955 from Wake Forest College, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a kind, loving person who always saw the best in everyone. Mr. Preston was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Joy Taylor Preston; two sons, C. Thomas Preston Jr. of Gainesville, Ga., and Mark T. Preston and wife Suzanne of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Taylor Preston and Melanie Preston of Clemmons; and a brother, Herman Fenton Preston Jr. of Chapel Hill. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 28, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, Reynolda Road. A private interment will follow the service. Family will receive friends an hour before the service from 2 to 3 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff in the Neuro ICU at Forsyth Medical Center, with special thanks to Dr. Chere Chase, Stephanie Goddard, and Regina Storey. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or Center Grove Baptist Church, 8200 Center Grove Church Road, Clemmons, NC 27127.

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Preston's passing. I'll always remember the way he warmly greeted me at his home or one of our sporting events, the way he said my name ray-MON. I especially feel sad for Mrs. Preston and for Mark. But I admit feeling sad for me too- it feels like a part of my childhood is gone. I feel sad for Mark & Chuck too because it's not just my childhood--it was OUR childhood--Mark, Chuck, and me. It's a sad day. My prayers are with the family. I wish I could be there for you, Mark.
