David Sloan Obituary

Sloan, David Ralph

April 11, 1943 - March 13, 2022

David Ralph Sloan, 78, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Duke University Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Baltimore, MD on April 11, 1943, to the late French McKinley Sloan and Thelma Williams Sloan. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sloan.

David grew up in Iredell County and graduated from Scotts High School in 1963. He completed his Bachelor's in Business Administration in 1968, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Catawba College. David worked for Northwestern Bank for many years before he left to open a men's clothing store in King, NC. He moved to Elkin, NC, in 1986 to open David Sloan Insurance as a Nationwide Insurance Agent, retiring in 2006. David spent most of his retirement years living in Mooresville, NC, on Lake Norman. David loved his grandkids immensely and was known to many people simply as "Pa." He loved the lake and loved spending time there with his daughters, grandchildren, family, and friends. He spent countless selfless hours there entertaining his family and friends. He was loved, admired, trusted, and respected by many people that will miss him beyond measure.

Remaining to cherish David's memory are his wife of 58 years, Phyllis; daughters, Allyson Grainger and her husband David, and Jennifer Sloan; grandchildren Mason Bovender, Maddox Bovender, Abbey Nunn and Jacob Nunn; step-grandchildren, Sam Grainger, Joey Grainger and Zach Grainger and his wife Danialle; step-great-grandchildren, Dennis, David, Janie and Annalee Grainger; brother, Barry Sloan and his wife Rose; and a host of very special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where David was a member.

The family would like to thank the entire care team of doctors and nurses on the 7th Floor Neuro ICU at Duke University Hospital for their amazing level of dedication to giving David the best care possible and the compassion shown to him and his family. Also, thank you to the many family and friends for all the prayers, time, and support given to them during this difficult time.

Memorials may be made to The Backpack Ministry c/o Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, 3655 Reed Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27107; or City With Dwellings, PO Box 20061, Winston-Salem, NC 27120.

My sincere condolences go out to all of David's precious family. You were the center of his life. I know him as a friendly, kind man who brought sunshine and laughter to our social gatherings in Mooresville. I share your sadness for being separated from him even though we know he is in a better place. Love, Wanda Emanuelson

So sorry to hear. Mr. Sloan gave me my 1st job in the financial business at NW Bank, King back in the late 70s. Always had respect for him. May God provide comfort to his family.
