Diane Crichlow Obituary

Crichlow, Diane Buie

August 28, 1938 - March 5, 2023

Diane Buie Crichlow, 84, died Sunday March 5, 2023, surrounded by family. She was born in St. Petersburg, FL, August 28, 1938, to Bette Simpson Buie and L.D. Buie, Jr., and was predeceased by her husband of 59 years Thomas Crichlow; her beloved sisters, Sandy Buie Engert and Betsy Buie Miller; and her nephews, Andy Engert and John McQuaig.

Diane grew up in St. Petersburg, where she was a national leader for the American Red Cross and a member of the Junior League. She attended Florida State University and St. Petersburg Junior College. She met Tom, the love of her life, on a blind date and married him in 1959. Diane and Tom moved to Houston in 1971, where she continued to be active in the Junior League and was always ready to help in her children's schools or in their church.

After moving to Winston-Salem in 1993, Diane became involved at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, where she was Docent Chair, head of the Flower Committee, and helped establish the museum shop. Diane loved traveling to the homes and studios of the artists and writers she studied at Reynolda House and especially cherished time spent with her husband in Charleston, the Hudson River Valley, and the Brandywine Valley.

Diane is survived by daughters, Nancy Crichlow (Mark Ball) of Austin, Susan Elster (John) of Winston-Salem; and son, Thomas Crichlow (Jennifer) of Durham; grandchildren, Alison Elster Duncan (Jordan), Caroline Crichlow-Ball (fiancé, Chandler Payne), Jack Elster (Hannah Faye), and Henley Crichlow; and great-grandson, Parker Elster Duncan, the light of her last year; as well as her nieces, Pam Engert Prow, Lisa Diane Engert Redhead, and Sarah Ruth Miller Boye.

Diane was a resident of Arbor Acres, where she enjoyed volunteering with resident activities and the Arbor Acres Shop, and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will be held Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reynolda House Museum of American Art, 2550 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to Second Harvest Food Bank, 3655 Reed Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27107. To the family of Diane , I´m truly going to miss seeing Diane at the salon. She has been a friend and client for many years. Diane was one of the most beautiful and nicest people I´ve ever met and I loved hearing all of her stories , especially of her and Toms travels. I have to say I was heartbroken at the news as I was just thinking the other day it was time to get Diane´s yearly peeps for Easter. It has also been a pleasure meeting her daughters . Heaven certainly has a new angel with some huge wings. Sincerely, Gray Smith

Diane was a beautiful woman in heart and in spirit. She always had a smile on her face and kind words. The love she had for her children and grandchildren was infectious! She would light up telling you about all of them. I´m so grateful she was surrounded by her family when she went to be with Tom. She will be dearly missed

She will be missed by so many. Ms. Crichlow was one of my favorite residents at Arbor Acres, such a sweet spirit with so many wonderful stories. It is a peaceful thought that she has been reunited with the love of her life. Thoughts and prayers for her loved ones - a very special lady indeed.
