April 8, 1932 - January 27, 2021

Frederick Gordon Overstreet, passed away peacefully January 27th, and has gone on to "Sweet Beulah Land" to be with the Lord and his precious wife Phyllis. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and devoted friend to many. The family will plan a celebration of life service at a later date. Fred will be laid to rest with his wife Phyllis during a graveside service at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest, VA on Saturday, February 6th 2021 at 1PM officiated by Pastor Patrick A. Marion of Elm Grove United Methodist Church.

Fred was born to the late Louise and James Overstreet in Forest, VA on April 8th, 1932. Fred graduated from New London Academy then to Lynchburg College, during his final year at Lynchburg College, Fred married the love of his life, Phyllis Coleman Overstreet on June 8th, 1953. He and Phyllis moved to New Orleans where he finished his schooling at Tulane University with a Masters in Public Health. Fred worked at the Central Virginia Health Planning Agency, VA State Health Department and retired from Forsyth County Department of Public Health. Due to either work or education requirements, Fred and Phyllis of 58 years resided in Lynchburg, Lawrenceville, Lexington, and Richmond, VA and New Orleans, LA, before moving to Winston-Salem in 1981. He began working in 1981 for the Forsyth County Department of Public Health as the Environmental Health Director, he retired in 2004. Fred also enjoyed working at Radioshack part time.

Mr. Overstreet's civic accomplishments include involvement in the West End Volunteer Rescue Squad and Forest View Volunteer Rescue squad, both located in Richmond VA, as well as disaster work with the American Red Cross, and Forsyth Amateur Radio Club. Fred was very proud of his heritage and loved all of his extended family in Virginia dearly. He was an active member at Elm Grove United Methodist Church of Pfafftown. His passions included mexican food, going on walks and reading the newspaper in his recliner. Fred was a great storyteller and his stories included lessons on how to live a meaningful life. He was kind, honest and had a smile that would light up any room. Fred was truly an inspiration for us all to be the best version of ourselves, and that is truly his greatest gift.

Mr. Overstreet will be remembered and cherished by his Son John Gordon Overstreet, Grandchildren Zack Overstreet, and Melissa Overstreet Baker (Jeremy Baker), and three great-grandchildren; Noah, Lillian and Evelyn Baker.
