Iris Atkins Obituary

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Iris Alice Bowman Atkins, 82, of 135 Grace Ridge Way, Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Bernard Atkins, died Wednesday night, Nov. 5, 2003, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. Atkins was born March 29, 1921, in Patrick County, Va., to the late James and Addie Smith Bowman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Shelton Church of the Brethren. Surviving are a daughter, Alma Atkins Easter of King; a granddaughter and spouse, Tammy and Kirt Hege of Clemmons; a grandson, Mark Timothy Easter of King; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Hege, Matthew Hege and Laura Hege, all of Clemmons and Leighann Hege of Winston-Salem; and four brothers, Pate Bowman of Claudville, Millard Bowman of Mount Airy, James Gilmer Bowman of Mount Airy and Wade Bowman of Cana, Va. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by a son, Steve Atkins; five sisters, Nancy Willis, Inis Smith, Lola Payne, Ocie Bowman and Pansy Bowman; and seven brothers, Ausby Bowman, Munice Bowman, Odell Bowman, James Harvey Bowman, Roden Bowman, Haywood Bowman and General Gray Bowman. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Tim Gammons and the Rev. Hal Sonifrank, with burial to follow in the Indian Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Nov. 7, at the funeral home.
