Clinard, Dr. Jack Alspaugh
January 12, 1925 - July 25, 2022
Dr. Jack Alspaugh Clinard, age 97, of Supply, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022.
Born January 12, 1925, the youngest child of Walter and Maude Clinard of Winston-Salem, Jack served in the Navy as a medic during World War II and graduated from his beloved alma mater, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1950. In 1951, he married Virginia Webb Ballard of Lincolnton, North Carolina and began serving as a minister of music to a local congregation, a vocation he would practice for more than 60 years. In 1965, Jack began teaching at Alderson-Broaddus College as a professor of music and chair of the department, teaching voice and conducting the college choir. In this position, he embarked on several concert tours throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. In 1986, Jack and Virginia returned to North Carolina, where Jack again served as minister of music for various churches, completing his career at Holden Beach Chapel, where he served for 15 years. An avid collector of music, movies, coins, friendship, and laughter, Jack spent his long life curious about the world, eager for adventure, and hopeful for the future, a manner and method of engaging the people and places he encountered that his family admired and sought to emulate.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Edna Earl Einstein; his brother, Bascom Clinard; his wife, Virginia; and his oldest daughter, Anne Clinard Barnhill. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Clinard; his son-in-law, Frank Barnhill; his grandsons, Michael, Jason, and Adam; and six great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at Holden Beach Chapel in early fall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and the Jack and Virginia Scholarship Fund at Alderson-Broaddus University.
