Jacquelyn Owen Obituary

OWEN WINSTON-SALEM ~ Jacquelyn Day Owen Jul. 7, 1928 ~ Dec. 7, 2011 Jacquelyn Day Owen, 83, died on December 7, 2011 at her home, after a long battle with cancer. She was a former reporter and assistant city editor of the Twin City Sentinel. She was born on July 7, 1928 to Stephen and Maggie Creech Day, in Cumberland Kentucky. She graduated from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky and the University of Kentucky Lexington where she majored in journalism. She was married to Floyd L. Owen, a retired senior engineer for Western Electric, who died in March of 2007. They spent their entire married life in Winston-Salem, which they cherished as home. After leaving the newspaper she continued to write & was the author of four books, including "Early Settlers On The Poor Fork," and "Once More Dear Home," a regional history of Southeastern Kentucky. Jackie attended Konnoak Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, and was on the Board of Friends of the Southside Branch Library. She is survived by two sisters, Hazel Hunt of Fairhope, AL; Ruth McLemore of Cincinnati, OH; a brother, Robert L. Day, of Houston TX; a brother-in-law, Lionel Owen, of Nashville, TN; and a sister-in-law, Tanya Owen. A private burial will take place prior to the Memorial Service which will be held at Konnoak Baptist Church on Sunday, December 11 at 3 p.m. Reverend John Bishop, pastor of Konnak Baptist Church, will have a spiritual message. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at salemfh.com.

I am saddened beyond words at the loss of a dear friend. She was as tough as they come in her battle with cancer. I will miss her terribly, but cherish our friendship forever.
