James Johnson Obituary

James Calvin Johnson, Jr.

Mar 3, 1947 - Aug 28, 2024

On Wednesday August 28, 2024, James "Calvin" Johnson, Jr. got to "ring the bell". No more chemo, no more radiation. Calvin is cancer free and Home with His Savior. Hallelujah! Calvin was born in Mt. Airy, NC to J.C & Doris Johnson and he lived there until he left to join the United States Army in June of 1968. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and was so proud to serve his country. In 1962, he met the love of his life-Brenda McQueen. They were married on May 19, 1968, and spent the next 52 years loving life together. When Brenda went to Heaven on March 7, 2021, Calvin was heartbroken. We praise God that they are now together again and with Jesus for all of eternity. They have one son, Jim Johnson (wife Joni) and one daughter, Cindy Johnson (husband Steve) both of Winston Salem, NC. Jim and Joni have two sons, Caleb (wife Elizabeth), and Elijah. Calvin has one sister, Kay Aycock (husband Roger). Calvin was a devoted man of God and a prayer warrior. He was a faithful member of Old Town Baptist Church, and he served there in many different capacities through the years. He also served our city for well over 30 years and retired from the Department of Transportation with the City of Winston-Salem. Calvin loved his family, and he lived to spend time with them. Whether it was a ballgame, a concert, a school program, wedding planning, taking the boys to get pricy Starbucks or "smushies" or taking care of Buck, Snickers, or Fox, he was always there. He was the absolute best husband, dad, brother, and "Pa" that one could ever hope for.

We will have a service to celebrate Calvin on Saturday Night October 19 at 6 p.m. in the Christian Life Center of Old Town Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the "NC Disaster Relief Fund" at Old Town Baptist Church-4386 Shattalon Dr. Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or to the "Gold Shield Foundation of North Carolina", PO Box 52 Winston-Salem, NC 27102. What a wonderful man Calvin. Knowing him and Brenda and Jim and Cindy was a great time for my family while attending South Fork Baptist Church. We continued our friendship when our paths took us on different paths. But one thing remained - the love that they had for us and our love for them. We experienced sorrow, happy times, new birth and so much more. My thoughts, prayers, memories and continued love and respect will always be with me. Love to Jim, Joni, Cindy and all the family.

We spent the last 12 years beside Calvin and Brenda as neighbors in Langdon Village. Calvin was a cherished neighbor and friend that will lovingly be remembered. They were great Christians and lived the Christian Life in word and deed.
