Jean Bryan Christopher Spaugh passed away Monday morning, October 27, 2025, following an extended illness. She was 78 years old.
Jean was born on Halloween, 1946, in Union, S.C., to Jennings Bryan Christopher and Jeannette May Christopher. She attended Union High School and Columbia College, and then attended Hollings College in Roanoke, Va., on a scholarship to study creative writing and literature.
She taught high school at Ashley Hall in Charleston, S.C.; Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Columbia College, Columbia, S.C.; and various high schools in the Atlanta area.
Jean was a respected fiction writer and also authored several cookbooks featuring Southern restaurants. Her novel "Something Blue" received nominations for the Pulitzer Award and the National Book Award, and the Barnes and Noble New Writers Award.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Richard Spaugh and her daughter Amanda Weekley, both of Winston-Salem; and her brother William Christopher of South Carolina; and five grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by her son Adam Spaugh.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the Salem Moravian Graveyard in Old Salem, Winston-Salem.

I am sorry to hear she passed, i absolutely loved her, I had her for English at Salem Academy! She was one of the best teachers I ever had, she instilled confidence in me, I don´t really know how she did that, but she certainly did! I miss her terribly although I haven´t seen her in years, my deepest condolences to Mr Spaugh & the rest of her family & students & friends!
