Jerry Murdock Obituary

Murdock, Jerry W.

August 7, 1939 - February 28, 2024

Jerry W. Murdock, 84, husband of Joan Murdock of Greer, passed away at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Born in Mocksville, NC, he was the son of the late Harvey and Hester Poole Murdock.

One of twelve children, Jerry grew up in an orphanage in Winston-Salem, NC. He graduated R.J. Reynolds High School in 1958 and then attended High Point University. Following graduation, Jerry served in the US Navy for several years as an Officer aboard the USS Shangri-La Aircraft Carrier. In 1976, Jerry started IPS Packaging & Automation in the basement of his farmhouse near Greenville, S.C. His journey from humble beginnings to leading a company that is now integral to the packaging processes of countless businesses across the United States is a testament to the strength of the foundation he constructed. Jerry truly felt the importance of giving back and helping others, some of which included fully endowed scholarships at High Point University and The Citadel. Jerry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Greenville.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his four children, Kendra Lee Wells, Kevin Scott Murdock, John Derrick Murdock (Julie), Bradford Colin Murdock (Susan); nine grandchildren; and three brothers, Gilmer Murdock, Graham Murdock, and Johnny Murdock.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Aileen, Christine, Jim, Rob, Vance, Roy, Bernice, and Sam.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Graceland East Memorial Park.

Our son Chester was a classmate of Derrick´s in Lima Company at The Citadel. He would tell us about Mr. Murdock´s visits and including friends of Derrick´s. Including our son was important since we live in Northern Indiana. Chester told us a humorous story about Bowen´s Island. After reading about Mr. Murdock, this quotation seems to describe him and his influence on so many people.
"The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." Mitch Daniel´s
