Kenneth Crutchfield Obituary

CRUTCHFIELD ADVANCE - Kenneth Earl "Ken" Crutchfield, 72, of Advance, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 9, 1938 in Forsyth County to Carl Carroway and Ruth Stanfield Crutchfield. Ken started school in Winston-Salem but graduated from Fairmont High School. He graduated from High Point University, where he was a proud member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, in 1961. After returning to Winston-Salem, he adopted Wake Forest University because of his love of their athletic program, especially football. He was very involved with the Wake Forest Deacon Club, serving as president from 1981-83, and he mentored and befriended many athletes, coaches and supporters. An avid photographer, Ken often shared pictures of athletes with parents who weren't able to attend games. He also served two years as president of Wake Forest's Sportsmen's Club. Ken worked in the solid waste industry for 50 years. His career started when he was in college and he cleaned and painted Dempster Dumpsters during summer vacation. He worked in various areas with different companies but always maintained lasting friendships even with competitors in the industry. Ken loved people and loved talking to everyone he met. He truly never met a stranger and if he did he probably knew someone that the stranger knew. He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Carlotta Wilmoth and Evelyn Hawa; his step-mother, Gladys Floyd Crutchfield; a step-brother, Sonny Huffines; and a step-sister, Jane Britt. Ken is survived by Peggy, his wife of 49 years; and their three children, Robin Broyhill of Hickory, Caroline Kear of Winston-Salem and Chip Crutchfield and wife, Shea, of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Christian Broyhill and Paul Hunt Broyhill of Hickory, Jeffrey Alspaugh of Winston-Salem, Katie Kear of Winston-Salem and Trey Crutchfield and Spencer Crutchfield of Clemmons. Also surviving are brothers, Charles (Anne) Crutchfield of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Tom (Robbie) Crutchfield of Poplar Bluff, MO; and sister, Nancy (Knox) Wherry of Greenville, SC. Being from a family of six children, Ken leaves behind many nieces and nephews and their children that he was always very close to. It was Ken's wish that his body go to the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Bequeathal Program. Visitation with the family will be held following a Memorial Service at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Hayworth Miller Kinderton Chapel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, that lasting memorials go to Wake Forest Deacon Club Student Athlete Scholarship Fund, 499 Deacon Blvd. Winston-Salem, NC 27105 or to the NC ABC Development School for Children with Autism in honor of Spencer Crutchfield, 3904 Old Vineyard Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27014. Ken and I had many memories of good times and accomplished many of our common goals in the solid waste community. He was a good friend for many years.

I was so saddened that I have learned of the passing of my warm-hearted friend, mentor and former business associate. Ken, and "Doc" to so many, was a true leader in his chosen profession. His work and accomplishments will long be remembered and recalled. He will be greatly missed. Peggy and family, my heartfelt sympathy to each of you.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Crutchfield. The Crutchfields were some of the first people I got to know when I moved to WS at the start of high school. Your family made me feel so welcome all the time and it definitely made my transition a lot easier. 99% of the credit for me winding up @ WF belongs to him. When I think back over all the great memories of WF sporting events through the years, Mr. Crutchfield was a constant. He was always someone I sought out because he would put a smile on your face no matter what was going on. He will be missed. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Peggy...Chip,

I'm sorry about your loss of husband and father. Although Ken and I exchanged many emails between 1998 and this past October, I always hoped that he and I would meet at one of the Delta Omega Pika reunions that were held here in the Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach area after 1998. Our last meeting was at High Point College in 1960. He'll be missed. Phi phi kappa alpha.

Dear Peggy, Robin, Caroline and Chip,

Sharon and I send our deepest sympathy to you all. Ken was not only a friend...he was a mentor, supporter and inspiration to us over the years. Ken actually watched me grow up from Miller Street when he was a kid but became a significant part of our lives many years later through our mutual jobs at Brenner/Sanitary Container Service. He was instrumental in my moving up through the ranks at Sanitary. We had many great times working together including our traveling years. Much of what I learned about a professional presentation/proposal was influenced by Ken. His enthusiasim and positive attitude, humor and friendliness was the foundation for his relationships...professional and personal. We are so fortunate to have known Ken and you all. Time and circumstances separated us over the years only to have Ken's last few weeks bring us back together. Sharon and I will truly miss him. We're praying that God's Holy Spirit will comfort and guide you in the days ahead and you will be comforted by all the good and fond memories you shared as a family.

My deepest sympathy to all who loved Kenny. I had the pleasure of seeing him last year at our class reunion. He looked so healthy and as always so full of fun, it is hard to realize he is gone. I called some of his classmates while in Fairmont this weekend and they all were sorry to hear the news. Again my sympathy to all of you.

Dear Chip,

I am very sorry to hear about your dad. I have a lot of fond memories of him especially when you and I were kids.

I was fortunate enough to go to a lot of Wake football games with you all back then and your dad made the experience something I will always remember and cherish.

His excitement for the Deacs definitely laid the foundation for me becoming a Wake fan at an early age. I am quite sure there would be no other alternative! A smile comes to my face when I think back to those games. Very good times indeed.

I hope you will take comfort knowing that I value those experiences very much and I am so thankful for the way your dad made me feel welcome each and every time.

May God Bless you and your family.

Dear Chip,

I was saddened to hear today of your dads passing. Your dad was the person that got me excited about Wake Forest when we were kids. I remember vividly the enthusiasm in his voice about the Deacs when we would hang out at your house.

As you remember, while I was at Wake, your dad was Deacon Club president. In my mind...that was like being president of the United States. Your dad encouraged me to join the Deacon Club as a new graduate 20 years ago, and he had a grin ear to ear in telling me that me he hand delivered my check to Cook Griffin.

I remember seeing you both at a game about 5 years ago when I had the chance to let him how much of an impact he had on me personally while you and I were just kids and also later in life.

I viewed your dad as a role model where good human beings could inspire remarkable achievements through passion, drive, and commitment.

I can only hope that my memories along with countless others can give you and your family comfort that your dad was truly one of the very best.

God bless you and your family.

Your friend,

Mit

Peggy and family,
We are very sorry for your loss. Ken was a staunch supporter of Big Sweep and served as Chairman from 2005-2008. He was instrumental in strengthening our Board and was a fantastic fundraiser, but we will never forget his sense of humor and stories, and how he lit up a room when walked in. He was a fabulous mentor to me. May God bless you as you heal from this loss. Please let me know if there is anything I can do. Judy, NC Big Sweep president.

Peggy and Family..
Where does one start when they try and describe someone like Ken Crutchfield..Words like Loyalty, Integrity,Kindness,Hilarious, all come tumbling into my conciousness..I met Ken when we moved to Winston-Salem from Charlotte in 1944..He lived a couple of doors down from us on Miller Street..Thus began a remarkable friendship that lasted for 66 years..It is hard to imagine that my e-mail box will never again contain an encouraging or funny note from Ken..Thank God his brother Tommy and I will continue to exchange the latest chuckle and family news..Ken loved his wife and family above all else..He will be remembered by countless people as one of the the most loyal friends imaginable..May God bless Peggy and all Ken's family and friends as Ken blessed us with his remarkable life..

Ken, you will be missed by more friends and aquaintences than you can imgagine. You were truly a "character" with an infectious personality who loved the cameraderie of everyone you knew or just met. And 50 years in the waste industry...even the smell of garbage was a welcomed friend!! Too bad there aren't more Ken Crutchfields in the world.

Peggy:

Our sincere and heartfelt thoughts & prayers go with you during the loss of Ken. He always spoke of you with dignity, pride, respect and of course a little humor!

One of the true priviledges I have had in my life of getting to know Ken over the years and calling him a friend.

He has blessed so many with not only his gift of truly caring for others, but in showing that care with actions.

What a man I knew, and will be forever grateful.
