Larry Hungerford Obituary

Larry Lee Hungerford

Mar 25, 1936 - Nov 13, 2025

Dr. Larry Lee Hungerford, 89, of Bermuda Village in Advance, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025. Born near Los Angeles, California, on March 25, 1936, he was the son of Thelma and Earl Hungerford.

Larry was a lifelong learner and educator. He earned his Master's degree in History from Ball State University and his doctorate in economic education at Ohio University. He dedicated many years to teaching as a college professor at Winston-Salem State University. In 1992, Larry retired from academia to pursue a career in financial management, initially forming his own business before joining John Woodard at Woodard & Company.

Though married three times, Larry found his greatest happiness with his wife, Susan ("Sue") Hungerford, whom he married on August 29, 1983. Together, they shared a passion for exploration, visiting 75 countries and organizing family reunion trips to celebrate birthdays and special moments with loved ones.

Larry was an avid sports enthusiast who loved the camaraderie of the game and enjoyed playing poker. In later years, he and Sue became passionate Scrabble rivals, engaging in marathon matches that showcased his love for words and friendly competition.

Larry's unwavering belief in the power of education extended far beyond his own work in the classroom. Each year, he and Sue personally sponsored the education of 75 students in Uganda and Vietnam, ensuring young people in underserved nations had opportunities to pursue their dreams and build brighter futures. This commitment reflected his deep conviction that education is a transformative force for individuals and society.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Susan ("Sue") Hungerford.

His children and their families include:

- Daughter Pamela Pettyjohn, with husband Max and son Andrew

- Son Steven Hungerford, with wife Lorena and children Josiah and Zoe

- Son Stan Hungerford, with wife Judy and children Ben (with spouse Taylor and daughter Violet), Caleb, Emily, and Aaron

- Daughter Mary Cranfill, with husband Charles and children Kiera (with spouse Ben), Flora, and Ella

- Daughter Sandi Hungerford

He also leaves behind his stepchildren:

- Stepdaughter Ceci McGuire, with husband Bill and daughter Madeleine

- Stepson Nathaniel Doersam, with wife Cathrine

Larry was preceded in death by his sons Greg and James Hungerford. James's surviving family includes his wife Tina and their children Christopher and Myriah (spouse Cody and child Graylyn).

The family will host a drop-in memorial reception at Bermuda Village on Thursday, November 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a private family dinner.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry's memory may be made to Just Hope in Mocksville, a charity close to his heart.

Larry will be remembered for his sharp mind, his love of travel and learning, his delight in games and friendly competition, his support of education, and most of all, his commitment to bringing his family together and creating shared experiences. His legacy lives on in the lives and stories of those who loved him.

As a teacher, I went to many of Larry´s financial meetings at schools and at library. He advised me on what was available to teachers and how to maximize my financial investments in the best possible way. Thanks to Larry´s advice I was able to have a very wonderful nest egg that provides a secure and comfortable lifestyle for me at age 75.
I´m so glad he lived a very happy life with his family and was healthy enough to traveling. He was kind and very helpful to me.

Dr. Hungerford was one of my history professors at WSSU in the 70´s. He was by far the best instructor that I ever had. Because of him,I taught Social Studies and Civics for 30 years.

Steve and family:

Your dad inspired a whole generation of people whom he taught about investing wisely. We were one of many who attended your free seminars at the library. Thank you for the many insights and recommendations over the years, from you and your dad.

So tough to lose a dad. May the Lord give you His comfort.
