Mary Lamond Hutcheon Shoosmith

Mary Lamond Hutcheon Shoosmith died peacefully Saturday morning, June 4, 2005, at home in Winston-Salem. Mary was born Oct. 7, 1910, in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. She grew up at "Rose Cottage," Meadowbrook Farm, Chesterfield, Va. During this time, she was the first May Queen at her Beulah School. While a teenager, Mary became the ladies' chauffeur for the Jeffries family at Meadowbrook Farm, and later traveled with her family to visit relatives in Arbroath and Carnoustie, Scotland. She married into the Shoosmith family and operated the Green Top Inn next to Shoosmith's Garage in Chesterfield. Mary reared her own five children as well as her infant nephew. She cared for her parents and husband's parents in their elder years. Mary's life was filled with love, caring for others and the gift of finding the good and the beauty in all people and all things. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Clark Hutcheon; her brother, William Hutcheon Jr.; one of her children, Harry Thomas Shoosmith Jr.; her infant nephew, Gary Shoosmith; and her husband, Harry Thomas Shoosmith. Mary is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, June Henshaw, Ann and James McInnes of Winston-Salem and Mary Booton and Agostino Sciacqua of Naples, Fla; and her son, William Shoosmith of Tiffin, Ohio. Mary's grandchildren and their families, who enriched her life, are Shelley Henshaw Woods and her husband, Toni; Roland Henshaw; James Henshaw III of Virginia Beach and his son, James Henshaw IV of Mechanicsville, Va.; Patrick Henshaw and his children, Victoria, Courtney and Patrick Jr. of Pennsylvania; Tami McInnes Pittman and her husband, Art, and their daughter, Sarah; Duncan McInnes of Winston-Salem; Laura McInnes Davimes and her husband, Roy, and their daughter, Gemma, of Chesterfield, Va.; Jennifer McInnes Coolidge and her husband, Channing, of DeLand, Fla; John L. Booton and his wife, Daniella, and their son, John Eric Booton, of Alexandria, Va.; Richard Booton of Pearl, Miss.; and Holly Booton of Key West, Fla. Mary's family deeply appreciates the caring compassion, support and help provided by Dr. Francis X. O'Brien, nurses Donna and Pam and others with Wake Forest Physicians, as well as Dr. John Hodges, Dr. Austin Temple, Tarheel Home Health, Metro Nursing and Senior Services of Winston-Salem. Mary's family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Vogler & Sons, Reynolda Road, in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Bliley's Chippenham Chapel in Richmond, Va. A service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 9, at Bliley's Chippenham Chapel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery with her family. In lieu of flowers, Mary would have wanted the needs of others met with memorials made to Senior Services of Winston-Salem, 836 Oak St., Suite 320, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
