DENTON - Neal Larry Morris Jr. died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a courageous battle against cancer. Mr. Morris was born Dec. 2, 1964, in Guilford County to Neal Larry Morris Sr. and Imogene Walker Morris. He was a member of Oakview Baptist Church in High Point. He received a bachelor's degree from Elon University in 1988, where he played varsity football. Mr. Morris taught at Northwest Guilford High School, T. Wingate Andrews High School and was currently employed by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system as director of the Alternative School at Reynolds High School. While at T. Wingate Andrews High School, Mr. Morris was a weight-trainer, assistant football coach and head coach for indoor and outdoor track. During his tenure as track coach at Andrews High School, his team won every dual track meet, the regional track meet and claimed four state 3-A championships. He was also named "conference coach of the year" each year he was at Andrews. Mr. Morris was selected to receive the 2001 Girls Track and Field Coach Award for North Carolina by the National Federation of Coaches Association. He was also selected to receive the 2001 Track and Field Coach Award by the National High School Coaches Association. Mr. Morris is survived by a son, Hayden Alexander Morris of High Point; his parents, Neal Larry "Tuck" Morris Sr. and Imogene Walker Morris of Denton; and a brother, Mark Morris and wife Katherine of Hilton Head, S.C. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at First Baptist Church in Denton. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the residence on Bombay Road. Memorials may be directed to Hayden Morris Education Fund, c/o First Bank, P.O. Box 248, Denton, NC 27239.
